Friend needs help

How do you help someone who you have a lot of feelings for that everytime they get some money they go and get high on drugs. Have tried praying for this person, talking to him, taking him to church and none of it seems to help. It really gets me down. As it is I suffer from depression myself.

Sometimes I think I just need to totally get this person out of my life. It still hurts to see him do this to himself. One time he even told me he hated himself.

Maria I can see you are hurting. It is so difficult to see someone you care about doing things that you know is harmful. But unfortunately we cannot control or "fix" people who don't want to change.

When we try, we only end up making ourselves more anxious and depressed. Trust me on this one.

I had a nephew who was having an extremely difficult time a couple of years ago. I tried so hard to "fix" him that my anxiety and depression got so out of control that I was paralyzed in fear and went through a difficult time myself.

You can offer him support but if he doesn't want it there is not much you can do, continue to pray for him because prayer does work.

Thank you bna, I'm sure your right! I need to learn to let go and let God! It is so hard to do when you see someone that you care about being self destructive. I will keep praying and thanks for your prayers.

I feel for you, I've had a few of those come to me for encouragement & support but it ended up wearing me out, people like this can drain you of your time & energy if you are not careful. I like helping people but have learned that a lot of these people don't want help and the last thing I want to do is enable someone to stay the way they are. Keep praying for guidance, direction and wisdom to know what to do.
