Hello everyone! I was just recently prescribed Buspar for anxiety. I have refused to take antidepressants and want to get off xanax. Has anyone had any luck with this drug. I haven't started taking it and was wondering if it helped anyone else.
Hope all is well!

Hi Carol! Thank you for your response! Wow I can imagine after 22 years on xanax you would definitely have to be detoxed. That's a long time! I've only had anxiety and have been taking .75mg per day of xanax for 1 year and 3 months now! I'm hoping that the buspar will be all I have to take. What do you think? How many milligrams were you taking? I believe that the program will help us all. You just have to stay determined and BELIEVE! :)

Hi Jenny,
I can not take antidepressants, because they increase my anxiety. My doctor decided to put me on Buspar six months ago, and I have had good luck taking it. Since I am sensitive to medications, I take a very low dosage - 5 mg., twice a day. This low dosage has been very beneficial to me.

Hi,
I was on klonopin and my new Dr. took me off of it and prescribed buspar. I am taking 15mg in the morning and at night. It helps a lot. I have very bad panic attacks. Since I have been on it I have done a lot better. It does take a little bit to build up in your system. When I start to feel like I'm getting one it goes away.

Oh great! It's good to hear good news about it and I really hope it helps me! Thank you all for your replies. I was just scared to take it. But I really want to get off the xanax! I know xanax is not good for us!

Ziggy,

I am also very sensitive to antidepressants and most other medications and am terrified of trying something new. I am currently on 0.5 mg of Clonazepman (Klonopin) 2x daily...as I have been for the past 7 years. It is no longer helping me.

I tried Lexapro 5 years ago and it actually caused me to have back to back panic attacks, and I truly thought I was going to die! Since then I am afraid of trying anything new...is Buspar somehow different from other antidepressants?

Thanks in advance!

Hi ReinventingMe,
Buspar is not an antidepressant, it's a antianxiety drug used for anxiety only. That's as far as I know! Its a class B drug that can even be used during pregnancy. It's really safe. But my doctor also said that it's mild. I think I may just give it a try. A tried Celexa (antidepressant) for 3 days and my anxiety was through the roof! I don't like antidepressants either. Only because I have only anxiety and not depression. Hope this helps!
Take Care,
Jen

ReinventingMe,

As Jenny mentioned, Buspar is for anxiety and is not an antidepressant. My doctor told me that Buspar has been around for many years. Even though I am taking such a low dosage, I am very happy with the way I feel now.

Jenny,

I also had a bad reaction to Celexa, which really scared me. I had only been on it for seven days, when I had an episode with my walking. I felt like my brain was not communicating with my legs. One day I was at the hospital for a test, and the nurse asked me what medications I could not take. I told her that when I was on Celexa I felt like I was having a stroke. She said that she had heard a lot of patients say the same thing.
