I have been trying again to start exercising. I am training to get into the police academy soon so I have begun working out. I can't even walk my dog without getting anxious! I get really dizzy and my vision gets blurry and I start to shake. I have tried and tried to get over this thinking Im out of shape and need to get back into it but NOTHING works and I really want to exercise and get in shape. It is really discouraging!! does anyone have any advice?? I need help

Anna -

Going on the assumption that you've spoken with your doctor or otherwise know that you are healthy enough for exercise, then there is nothing about exercise that should worry you. In fact, it should help with your anxiety. Not only does it burn up the stress hormones like adrenaline but it also causes endorphins to be released, which have a positive effect on the way you feel.

If going outside is a problem, consider starting your exercise program in your home. Try using a home aerobics video. You can pick one up at most places selling DVDs. Remember to start slow and to work up towards longer and more intense workouts. Don't push yourself too hard too fast or you'll likely burn out and not want to continue.

Once you feel a bit more comfortable exercising, then try taking your exercise outside. I often use exercise to help deal with my anxiety, particularly running. When I start to feel anxious, I just run harder, which burns those stress hormones up quicker and I end up feeling better.

Also, if traveling away from home is difficult, work up your distance slowly. Start with just a short walk out in front of your house. When your ready to move on, go for block. As you get comfortable with each step, push yourself a little farther each time until you can get where you want to go. This takes time to do, but it's very effective. But remember to keep pushing yourself by taking small risks otherwise you'll never make it to the next step.

Best of luck,
Jamie
