Hi all,

I have been on Lexapro for panic disorder and anxiety for about 4 weeks now. I started on 5 mgs and was increased to 10 mgs a little over 2 weeks ago. I also take .5 mgs of Ativan about 5 nights a week to help get through work. Last week I did quite well and remained fairly relaxed during the day, but this week, I feel like I have been having relapses again. Mornings are especially bad – I feel nervous, anxious, nauseous and tired. By the afternoon, I usually feel better. Is it normal to have ups and downs on medication? I’m worried and I really want this to work for me. I had to stop Zoloft because it seemed to lose its effect after a few years. Thanks.

Hi Teal,

The ups and downs are normal, but the relapse could mean that you are not on a high enough dose. While 10mg of Lexapro is considered therapeutic, you can increase to 15mg and 20mg under the care of your doctor.

A lot of people say Lexapro is a very quick drug - for me, after 3 months of experimenting everwhere from 5mg to 20mg, I did see some benefit, but not enough to stay on it. Everyone is different, though. If you feel like 10 was working and now it's not, you might want to talk to your doctor about upping to 15.

Hi Teal,

I agree, the ups and downs are normal and possibly you aren't on a high enough dose. I have a hospital psychiatrist as my medication specialist and I am on quite a higher dose.

Also, not every medication works for everyone as we all react differently to different drugs. Lexapro was the first one I found that I didn't have a bunch of side effects from and that I found really helped. Just keep your doctor up-to-date and see what he says. You may also benefit from seeing a specialist in that area if you aren't.

I, too, find mornings the toughest and the day better as it goes on. Hang in there. Are you on the anxiety program? I've just started and find many of the suggestions helpful.

Take care.

Thanks everyone. I am still feeling pretty yucky, but may try to get into my dr this afternoon. I truly appreciate all the advice!

I am on Lexapro also and find that the higher the dose I go on, the worse I feel :( At this point I am afraid to go on a higher dose.

I started Lexapro in June. It seems to be helping, but like you, mornings are still stressful. I still have mild stress throughout the day, but the real, gnawing kind of stress seems to be better.

A side effect that I am having is sweating. I sweat just sitting at my desk in an air conditioned building. I have to have a fan in my office to help keep me cool.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

I to am in week 4 of staring Lexapro. Last week I was doing well and other than a little anxiety in the am was able to handle it through out the day with no Xanex. This week is another story. My anxiety is so high and I have been taking Xanex every morning, afternoon, and night and have missed two days of work already this week. I am only taking .5 mg a day so I have put in a call to the my p.doctor to see if I need to increase the medicine to 10 mgs. I have high hopes that this medicine will help my anxiety and was wondering if anyone else was expericing the same effects.

Pack99 - Yes, I have also experienced sweating as a side effect. :(
This week has been so hard on me - I even had to come into work late again. I'm trying my hardest to hang in there, and ALL OF YOU have been helping. (Thanks). I am going to my counselor tonight and my regular dr on Friday.

I take 10mg of Lex for over a year now. It works great for me. But it did take about 6-8 weeks for everything to level off for me when I started it, I felt benefits of it in 2 weeks but after the 3rd/4th month there have been no issues and no anxiety.
