Hi.. im just curious- what was the "bad" reaction you had? how long have you been taking xanax and what does did you take this particular time?
the decision on whether or not to tell: try to determine the source of your anxiety at work that makes you feel like taking a xanax. if you are having panic feelings about embarrassing yourself in front of everyone or not being able to get help when you need it- i think it may be good for you to tell your friends or people you trust there..

It is on Xanax. Going on and off Xanax can give you the meltdowns that you mentioned in your post or worse.
It is like a really bad merry-go-round ride. I am I learning about these things and I am so thankful that I am not taking any med like this and wish no one had to go on these things at all. IMHO, This stuff is horrible and can be deadly, but it does help many other people.
I don't know what the answer to your particular situation is, but I will pray that God provide you a clearer answer than I can give.
There are many others here that take Xanax, and to each person that does the same, by getting on and off the Xanax almost all have horrible experiences when they take or stop taking these drugs.
As for whether to mention your taking the Xanax to your co-workers or others; I would say definitely not. Instead, go to these people and apologize for your inappropriate behavior, and leave it at that, or say you were really having a bad day.
From my point of view, mention the Xanax to your co-workers, is an invitation or fodder for their gossip mill. If you feel you need to tell some one, you have mentioned it to us, but if you still have to talk about it, speak to your wife or girl friend or life partner, your priest or your very closest friend.
I have to go now, or I am going to have a melt down, or have my b/p soaring into outer space and then I won't be good to anyone.

I would never discuss what anxiety medications I was taking with co workers or management, unless it was medically necessary in case of an emergency. They really don't need to know what your problems with anxiety are. I've seen this backfire in quite a few cases. Management can label you 'unstable' in their minds and it can really effect how you are treated at work and what responsibilities they intrust you with. You could easily explain that you are going through a difficult time right now but hope to be back to your old self soon. Apologize for the meltdown if you disrupted the office or your co workers work environment. I would leave it at that.
