My doc claims that Lexapro helps to permanently change your biochemicals and so when you come off (in the meantime building coping skills, working on personality challenges, talk therapy, etc) you are better off. What are your thoughts on this? I have heard from other docs that disagree and believe it's just a way to put off dealing with the anxiety. Not sure what I think. But I am certainly tired of thinking about my anxiety and would give anything for a full day or even half day of not having any thoughts about anxiety.

Jennyflo-I think as long as your in some program that helps you change your way of thinking and helps give you coping skills this will help. I go to a counselor in addition to doing the Combatting Stress and Depression Program kit. I smoke and want to stop, my counselor suggested when I get more coping skills under my belt to then stop. She doesnt want me to smoke, but it helps me even though it doesnt. So maybe stay on med til you get more coping skills under your belt? If you want off now, great, but get in some program to help support you.

If you try to overcome too many things at one time you may not accomplish any of them. Consentrate on 1 thing at a time.

Lex will likley slow down your negative thoughts so you can process them. Processing them includes developing coping skills such as thought re framing, shooting down or diffusing bad thoughts etc. These skills are taught in the program.

From lessons learned I'm not crazy about medications (I'm an unwilling but recovered perscription addict) but for some people Lex has been called a God send.

Many meds including lex can be challenging to taper off of and you need to evaluate carefully.

My doctor prescribed Lexapro, but my insurance didn't cover it so I am on Celexa. I see a psychiatrist for the medication and a therapist along with the program. I do my home work from the session and then take it to my therapist and we go over it together. I think the combination of the three has REALLY helped me to improve. I am so much better, but still have a ways to go.
Good luck in whatever you do. :)

I don't know if it permanently changes your biochemicals but I sure hope so! I have been on Lexapro for 9 months and it has been a God send for me! It took a long time to kick in, but I feel wonderful now! I went through the program and talked with a therapist and try to read everything I can. What you eat and how much you exercise also has a big impact on how you feel. I would like to taper off of the med after winter is over now that I have learned coping skills, eating skills, etc... Good luck with the Lexapro - if it seems to take awhile to work it did for me. I started out on 10 mg and had to move up to 20 mg and have felt great since! Good luck and God bless!

permanently change your biochemicals
I don't know for sure if Lexapro permanently changes your biochemicals, because I have been using it for three years. I stopped taking it at one point on my own. *I recommend noone ever do this without consulting your doctor* It caused some serious issues with my thinking. Essentially, I had full on anxiety and my first series of panic attacks that I couldn't deal with. Of course, this is when I researched Lucinda's program and have been on the road to recovery for three weeks now and I feel so much better. I am taking Lexapro again and will not come off of it until I have mastered the skills of this program. I think Lexapro has been wonderful and with the tools of this program, I feel empowered to recover nicely. The thing that bothered me the most is the daily requirement to have to take a pill. Best of luck.
