I read testimonials from time to time about people who have talked themselves out of a panic attack and then they havent had one since. I feel like the last 2 "potential attacks" I talked myself out of but it still leaves the fact that they are coming back but not fully taking over??? any suggestions????

Hi Marie,

I have not yet mastered the art of talking myself out of a panic attack. Do you have any helpful hints...maybe something worked better for you verses something else?

Hi Marie and Jazzy1,

I have not had a panic attack in close to 3 months. The last one was a biggy and if I feel myself getting worked up or angry I can now switch it off by thinking about how horrible the last one was for me. I just say to myself...what are you doing? where are you headed...step back and breathe deeply and calm down. Nothing is so bad that I want to ever be that out of control again. This has been very helpfull for me...it's mainly knowing the feeling of one starting and just saying stop to yourself and talking yourself out of it and into a calming, breathing, positve place. It gets so easy once you find what works for you.

Just get familiar with how the onset feels and learn ways to STOP and think and do whatever calms you down.

Good Luck!!!!

God Bless

Hello Marie and Jazzy 1:

It's been 5 months since my last big panic attack. I have had mounting ones, that is, ones that feel like they are coming on. I breath through them, I use positive self talk about how it's OK to have the panic. I don't try to stop the feelings, I let them come knowing if I do this, then they won't amount to anything big. I have been able to have one on the highway with my 10 y/o daughter in the car. I gave myself permission to be anxious and to pull off the highway if I needed to. I did alot of deep breathing and knew that I was able to drive even through a fast heart rate and sweating palms. It took alot, but was worth it because once the feeling subsided, which was about 1/2 hour...I was free. Good luck and keep moving ahead. I know the feeling of them still coming...but they will get less and less.

Take Care!
Lynn

Hi Marie and Jazzy1,

I've had problems with anxiety, depression and panic attacks for about 25 years. I didn't identify the anxiety until about 4 years ago or so. I've never been able to completely rid myself of panic attacks. I can recognize one coming now and am able to just let it come knowing that it will pass. I used to be unable to drive much, attend any type of meetings, shop, etc. comfortably. I now enjoy all of those things. I find that I have a lot less symptoms if I eat right, cut out the caffeine, and work out regularly. If I am in the car, most of the time I can plug in my relaxation tape or get out of the car and walk around, and it will pass quickly. I'm not sure where you are on your program, but you can always go back to any sections that might help, or start over again. Hang in there. You have the tools now to cope. I also take a very low dose of Lexapro. I've tried without and it doesn't work for me. Good luck!
