My local radio station had a contest with the question "Do this for 20 minutes to help alleviate depression. What is it?" The answer was to clean your house! We've come a long way, baby! LOL! So I took their advice and cleaned my kitchen for the first time in months! Feels good to see a cleaned off counter and floor. I recommend it. It sure helped my bad mood.

Hello Music fan....

I also heard a lot of things that you can do help depression...One of the things my doctor told me is that when you live in a clean, neat environment, it helps your mood to improve!
He also said is nice to stay in a place with a lot of light and bright!!!

I so believe cleaning helps our mood, because when I dont clean I feel like things dont go as good as they should...and when I have my house spotless I feel much better!
Good point Music fan!

Hope your doing ok!

hmm I've never thought of that!! it would probably help. I tend to get a little ticked when I clean wondering why my boyfriend doesn't think to do this stuff and why it's always me doing it so I try not to do it!! omg. crazy right? :) But I guess I need to ask him to help out...

I definitely agree 100%! Cleaning is good for the soul. When I lived with my parents, my mom would always tell me she knew when I was down b/c my room was messy. Right now the place is a pig sty and unfortunately I haven't been feeling so great.I usually live in a mess b/c I feel like I sometimes feel so badly about myself that I don't deserve to live cleanly.I am going to try this little 20 minute cleaning session right this second. Thanks for sharing MusicFan :) :)

Hey Lambert, your post was very interesting. Recently I've been feeling like a mild depression has set in. And, up until I cleaned it, my kitchen looked like a hermit lived in there. Dishes piled everywhere. Paint cans from when my condo was painted in May are still there. And a bookcase I moved in there when I got new carpeting in May. Still in my small kitchen! Ugh! So maybe that will be a sign for me to watch out for. When I see that I just don't give a damn about a clean counter, maybe it means I need to pay attention to my mood and attack an onset of depression. I'm going to keep that in mind. Thanks! Isn't it interesting that sometimes depression can seem sooo obvious after the fact, but when it creeps up on you it doesn't get much notice until it's too late and you're in its grip for a spell. Hope everyone is doing well, and living in a clean house! :)

I am not necessarily "OVERLY PARTICULAR" about having a clean home. However, when it is NEAT/TIDY - I am much more relaxed & calm. In terms of my DEPRESSION & as it relates to cleaning, a great tool I have is my having gotten in-tuned w/ ME - my gut instinct = my inner God voice. Depression is very subtle. It creeps ups on ya & you don't really realiz it. It so encompasses you + your life + surroundings, etc. Almost like it creates a STATE OF BEING - a negative one. I've never ever had depression prior to now. I am currently recovering fantastically - on the lowest dosage of medication. By my getting in-tuned w/ myself + getting to really know myself + getting to TRUST MYSELF, I am able to combat the depression. Why? Well, you see, depression will try & make you think & feel all the wrong things - it will create a wrong/negative state of being so that you/your soul & spirit/energy level/will/enthusiasm feel totally depleted. By you getting in-tune w/ YOU & TRUSTING THAT GUT INSTINCT YOU DO HAVE, you do THE OPPOSITE of what depression tells you - all that crap it tries to make you think is real - even w/o energy - you do it anyway. That leads to recovery fr depression.

I don't make light of our depression, sincerely. I do believe a good laugh @ it is healthy - LAUGHING IS GOOD & FREE. W/ that in mind, here's a picture as it relates to cleaning.

Your Friend,
LENORE

I definitely have to agree with you all about a clean house. If my house is neat, not showroom clean, just not so messy, I am much calmer. I used to be the person who dusted, swept, vacuumed, scrubbed the bathroom everyday before I felt better (had to lower those crazy expectation), now my house and my anxiety level - right where they are supposed to be. I feel much better. I just have to watch myself that I don't slip and raise my expectations to a point where nobody, including myself, can achieve.

Funny, you should say that... I just finished vacuuming the whole 1st floor of my house. It was very rewarding to not see debris on my carpet!
