What's healthy and tastes good?
I live in the country, so exercise is a given, but the food limitations are difficult. The homework suggests a lot of meat and fish. I don't care for fish and I don't eat much meat, and I can't stand tofu. I know there are healthy things at the grocery store that don't include meat or fish. What are they? Ideas and suggestions, or specific food mentions will be helpful to me. Thanks.
What a great topic! I'm really curious to see how others respond. I do eat meat (mostly chicken) but really don't have access to fresh fish, so I guess we're a little different. I know that fish is esp. important for "healthy" fat, but I wonder if a person could take Omega 3 as a supplement? I also know olive oil is a "heart healthy" fat.
A few mths. ago I started drinking smoothies every morning. I use frozen fruit (I keep peaches, strawberries, tart cherries, blueberries, and raspberries on hand), a cup of yogurt- whatever flavor, soy milk, a spoonful of flax seeds, and vanilla falvored powdered protein mix. It's tastey and not too filling, but still has the protein I need for a.m. energy. I also use a small pulsating blender (the rocket?) so much of this can be prepared the night before.
I also like to keep raw almonds around to munch on in the late afternoon when I feel sluggish.
Hum... I wonder if you did a websearch on healthy, vegetarian recipies what would you might find. I like recipies like this because you can always add meat.

Hi:
I'm not a vegetarian, I just don't eat a lot of meat.
But I think I mostly get the protein that I need.
Sometimes I eat cottage cheese for breakfast with a little fruit on it. The cottage cheese has about 5 grams of protein.
I like beans, pinto mostly. By eating a grain with the beans you get a perfect protein.
Sometimes I will eat peanut butter on toast for breakfast.
These are simple things. I know there are much tastier and much better ways to get what one needs from a diet
I just don't cook a lot anymore.
Emily's smoothies sound wonderful. I would like that, except that I don't like soy milk. But I might with the fruit mixed in with it.
I'm afraid that I'm not much help at all.
I buy frozen vegies and microwave for few minutes. You can add cheese to those, some of them, but I don't.
There are dozens of books at library on food and how to use it for best nutrients.
I'm just kind of lazy and stay with what I know.
Best of luck.
MJ

Hi Emily and Mary Jane, thanks so much for the tips. I know a 51 year old woman should have a better idea of healthy food choices for our session five diet, but I've been divorced for so many years, and I only cook when friends drop over. I have become a frozen meal expert, because I've tried them all, and that's what I usually eat for dinner. This diet cautions against more than 3 eggs a week. I eat an egg every day, and will have to limit eggs now. For the diet test, I do drink coffee every morning, one cup. I do eat cookies several times a week. I do eat chocolate several times a week. I do add white sugar to my iced tea. I do add salt, and I know frozen meals are streaming with salt. I don't smoke, don't drink alcohol, but I do spend time around smokers. In my part time work, it is hard not to be around smokers.
I have a freezer full of vegetables my mother and I put away from her garden last summer. That is too sad for me to deal with, so I won't eat those veges yet. Maybe this winter. I like the idea of a blender type shake drink, and I am happy to know that beans with a grain creates a perfect protein -- I did not think about beans, and have already added them to my shopping list. I don't know what soy tastes like, so will have to give it a try. Microwaved frozen veges with cheese does sound wonderful. Thanks so very much. I have some ideas, and some new menu items on my shopping list. I admit, I don't plan on giving up my cup of coffee in the morning, or my glass of iced tea at noon. Kind regards, Pecos.
P.S. Am I the only one who notices that Session Five gets very few posts for discussion and very few replies from posts? This part is so important, there are three additional pages in our workbook written by Dr. Fisher. He didn't put his pen to paper just for the heck of it. I have been altering my diet for a week now, and I began with headaches, then fuzzy head, and today I feel more energy. Finally. But my foods list is short. I really need new ideas.

I think that this is probably because people don't really want to change a lot of their habits in these areas. Plus I suppose many of us have made diet and exercise "resolutions" over the years that we haven't kept, and so we aren't convinced that this time will be any different.

Hello Pecos! ! !
I have been a vegetarian for 10 years but have recently (past few yrs) have been focusing on eating healthy. I know almonds and peanuts are very good for you to snack on. Almonds give yo energy, peanuts help you focus!! I would also drink a lot of water and tea (decaf) GINGER is my favorite thing. It is SOOO good for you. i love the tea! Eating a lot of fruit like apricots and apples are great too. Avocodo is great too. I slice one up and sprinkle lemon on them. mmmmmmm! Cranberries are good to help infection. But really try and buy organic of anything you get. Trader joes is a great place to shop. whole wheat spaghetti is better than the normal noodles. health food stores should have good fiber muffins. Fiber is very good for you. helps clean your stomach. . Try drinking a shot (diluted with water) of Apple cider vinegar . ACV helps clean your system as well. It is also good for your skin too! Really, staying away from dairy and meat is already a good start. Instead of using butter use the dairy free alternative. Soy instead of milk. Soy is good for your heart and doesnt have puss in it like milk does. Morningstar has amazing meatless meals that are so good. It doesn't taste like tofu! Oh Hummus is so good to.A lot of Mediterranean dishes are healthy and so delicious!! Try making smoothies with protein/fiber powder. I buy The soy (non dairy) powder at traders. Ok I'll stop writing now. good luck!!

I recently discovered fruit juices that are packed with nutrients by Naked or Bolthouse. The soy chai tea vanilla drink of Bolthouse is very good too. The green drinks they make look and smell awful but taste very good and are loaded with tons of good things. I have been making small changes like that, somewhat out of laziness. When I was single I was eating a lot of frozen meals too. What I started to do is freeze ground turkey patties so I could just grab one and cook it up with various cheeses or mustard. The george foreman grill is great for single serving burgers and chicken too. Another idea was to make shake n bake chicken one night and put the leftovers on a salad the next day or two.
