thank god im not the only one with this problem! i lose my appetite too but i still feel like i need food for energy or else ill get weak and shaky. so then i freak out all day about being able to eat each meal. i get the gagging problem too. i thought that was just my own weird thing but im so glad to know its not. and when i gag it scares me too. i just try to eat a little at a time like the others said. i try to eat bland things. like for lunch ive been having cottage cheese and french toast. usually that seems to go down pretty well. im trying all different things. ginger, marshmallow extract, some tea at night. and im also trying these licorice pills that help coat the stomach. but yet it still scares me!

i have lost 15 pounds in a month. my doctor gave me prilosec which now u can get over the counter. It just helps your stomach calm down enough to eat something light with out the gag reflux.

Yes the acid reducers (Prilosec etc.) do help a lot. It may be that the anxiety is causing excess stomach acid, which in me (I have GERD) can cause gagging and nausea- especially in the mornings.

This has always been my main problem as well. When the anxiety hits, I get nausea and can't eat. Then all the acid forms, you get gastritis (even ulcers) which hurts and you still can not eat! This is what usually ends up making me go off the deep end. I lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks, and I'm not big. But then you worry about the wt loss, then worry about no appetitie, etc etc etc. It is a terrible cycle to waste away, and scary. Meds help me get back on track, now trying CBT too. Good luck all.

Just recently my doc told me he thinks I have IBS but I think maybe it's just my anxiety coming back. I first had bad anxiety in 2006 for about 8 months every single day and I was really thin. I could not eat. All I could eat was soup and crackers and juice. Then I did the program and went to therapy and things got better, I met someone, got married in 2007 and of course gained some weight. 35 lbs! I am trying to diet and lost 12 lbs. but I have been getting anxiety more lately and feel sick to my stomach all the time. I have no appetite and always feel hungry and nauseated at the same time. Weird! I hate this feeling. I also have a hiatal hernia and acid reflux so that can be contributing also. I really hope I don't get an ulcer. My mom passed away recently from stomach cancer and my sister and I have stomach problems and don't want to develop what she had.

For me that's the initial start of anxiety in the pit of my stomach I feel so nauseau and I have to go to the bathroom IBS...I do try and make myself eat and drink water or else....you will be weak or pass out....just remember your stomach goes into high gear because it thinks something is wrong....and when we are anxious then red alarms go everywhere....Distraction is good and also thinking that i'm bringing this upon myself....it has nothing to do with anything or anyone but ME...so to reevaluate the issue although that is hard to do....I believe that's where the a & D starts for most of us....But to believe that this isn't permanent, your not going to die and this will pass....And I think we need to take the focus off of "why am I not hungry" because we tend to analyze it...but let it be....sometimes I just can't eat until dinner....but I say to myself I have to have something, anything and liquid for sure....Hang in there everyone this will pass and you know what we are going to laugh about it..have a blessed day

Try this idea. I've had the same issues (loss of appetite, fear of losing more weight, etc) and have made some headway with it, though I slip from time to time too. There is a book by Deepak Chopra called Perfect Health. In it there is a great description of what are basically the three main body/personality types (according to the ancient teachings of Ayurveda-what yoga came out of) which are called Doshas. Since you seem to be a person that shuts down when upset and can't eat, you may be what they call a "vata" dosha, meaning you tend to be on the thinner side, react anxiously when upset, excited easily, need a soothing environment, and on and on. Deepak outlines the best foods for vatas. I really suggest you read this book, but for now I'll tell you that vatas generally need to eat often and consume heavy, oily, fatty, warm foods. I know I know, you're having a hard time eating, I have been there so often. But you do need to get something down if you can, and when you do make sure it has some of the above qualities. Vatas can also take in a little more sweets, like honey, creams, etc., because they do need to the extra calories and will naturally burn them faster then the other two types of doshas(which are Pitta and Kapha). May seem strange if you've never heard of the doshas before, but I found Deepak's book to be extremely helpful for both my anxiety condition (lots of vatas have anxiety!) and for IBS. Good luck!

Hi Everyone,

I have been this way every time I went on a new AD. I just couldn't stand the thought of food. I did however crave jello and oranges so I lived pretty much on those until the nausea passed. I also had terrible heartburn and through tests learned I had sores in my stomach and was put on an acid pumping prohibiter which helped for a while then seemed to make my heartburn worse. I ate rolaids, drank maolox, pepto bismal, anything I could get my hands on if not at home. I got so even water started it up so again I couldn't really eat anything without getting my stomach going. I have IBS and a few other goodies along with the anxiety and depression but all is now much better and I am off all meds. I began taking calcium and vitamin D and noticed my heartburn stopped all together. It's been at least 2 months now and my stomach does NOT bother me at all even when I lay down...which was one of the worst times for the burning coming up into my esophagus. I also don't have the nausea anymore, my appetite is normal for me again. The IBS is still a problem but am working on finding something to help that. Lucinda sais raw bran everyday has helped her so will give that a shot. Nothing to lose...except maybe the IBS.

Just thought I would add my 2 cents worth. Hope you too can get relief.

Best Wishes :)

Hi Carol, :)

I'm taking Webber Naturals Calcium Magnesium with Zinc, I take one 3 times a day. Each one Has...333mg calcium, 167mg magnesium, 20 mg Zinc.

My Vitamin D is Jamieson, I am at 3 per day... and each has 1000 IU. Vitamin D is also important for Breast health. Some women take 5000 IU/ day.
I forgot to add in my post that calcium and vitamin C help with sleep problems. I am sleeping through the night most nights and fall asleep fast since I've been following the use of calcium and drinking a small glass of orange juice 2 time a day..one in the afternoon and one before bed. I really hope you get as good results as my mother and myself have had. Mom used to sleep only 2-3 hours a night and now gets 7-8 hours most nights.

Good Luck,
