Prozac helps with losing weight or loss of appetite for most. The doctor prescribes Prozac for me; I took if for only three days. I was on the edge, screaming for no reason. I stop it right away. I don't recommend going on anti depressant at all unless it is absolutely necessary. This is a temporary solution to the problem while you are seeing your consular and helping your body going through this time. As you know the effect of this antidepressant is going to wear off and your doctor will increase the dosage and eventually change your prescription for higher effective medicine.

Thank you for the responses. It is so hard to to decide about medication, because I've always had a fear of anti-depressants and side effects (especially weight gain) I also need to tapper off of valium. I'm taking 10 mg a day and every time I tapper off it and finally don't use it I get full rebound of the anxiety which is the worst feeling ever. I feel lost in what direction to go so I truly appreciate input on medication and actually any input is great for me at this point. I'm also recovered from alcohol and that definetly made my anxiety worse before and after i quit. I'm just really scared at this point and I want to be better.

Thank you, Lynne

Prozac for me had a very calming effect and I didn't need to take it for two weeks or more to feel an effect. It took the edge off but if I took any more than 10mg I lost all motivation to do anything. I kept it at 5mg every other day and it worked well for my anxiety. I can't say it lifted my mood and seemed to only work on my anxiety. I haven't taken it though since I started the program (going on 5 months now) and don't feel like I need it anymore.

Thanks for the information, did you gain any weight? I'm mostly am looking for something to ease the anxiety the most, it is been restricting me from doing things and i'm sick of having nausea and shakiness because I'm so nervous about everything. I feel like having a doctors appointment everyday to make sure I'm not dying, but I know thats part of my fear of something always wrong with me. I'm glad I found this program, it's been so frustrating not being able to talk to or have my husband understand me, he just gets irritated with me and dos not get why I am so scared to do anything and why i go to the doctors all the time and they don't find anything physically wrong. Thank you again for the input.

I didn't have any weight gain but imagine if the dose was higher I may have since it kinda slowed me down. Some people find Prozac very stimulating- I just happened to be one of the ones that have the opposite effect.

I tried prozac for a month but had to go off due to side effects like excessive shakiness (my hands were trembling like crazy) and racing heart. It felt like it increased my symptoms of anxiety, but the effects stopped right after i stopped. others i know have improved on it though. I instead ended up on paxil for two years and it really seemed to help the anxiety and depression, and its also used for OCD.
