Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to the boards. I am actually starting week 4 of the program this week and so far am doing really well. However, I am having a hard time applying the 6 steps to the the panic I get when I'm in a public place and am startled by something like loud music. I have a phobia of loud music and sometimes movie theaters-loud! Tonight I was at a social function with a work group and doing great until a band started performing and the intense rush of adrenaline I got from that loud music starting was terrifying and overwhelming. I really wanted to run, but knew that was not the right thing to do. I don't understand how positive self talk can help with overcoming this kind of panic which seems like it is a basic physical chemical response. I know I can try to self-talk myself out of it-but what about stopping it from happening altogether?:( Can anyone relate? Anyone?

Hi, I don't know if we have the same thing, but I too get a startle response from loud noises, and it started when I was a kid. I was thinking that in you situation the initial startle response may not stop, but when you apply the six steps, it may subside and you will feel more at ease and able to be in the moment. Maybe you could imagine what you might tell a child who is suffering...Best of luck

Hi...I have a problem with loud noise too. It used to just startle me, but now it makes me really shakey and all. I agree with Providence. I think the main purpose of this program is to be able to control our anxiety etc and I'm finding the 6 steps do help. I'm just getting started with this, so I'm not real good "taking control", but the breathing and assuring myself is helping. I like the idea of imagining talking to a suffering child. Good idea!....wishing you peace and happiness...Barb
