Tallboy,
I too used to drink a lot of coffee. I have found that advice or none, caffine blasted me. I suggest a good decaff blend. Coffee, which I know a bit about, as I roast my own coffee from fresh beans, is best when consumed within a few days of it's roasting. A rich blend of decaff is Columbian. Folgers makes a good "premier" blend, but not as good as freshly roasted. If you have a Starbucks nearby, that would probably be the close as you are going to get to freshly roasted coffee. A good brewer is a must too. I recomment Bunn. Clearly decaff is not going to give you that morning kick, but if your anxiety is severe enough you will find that decaff is a better alternative, and you WILL feel the difference.

Tallboy, if you used to drink 5-6 cups of coffee a day and cut back to 1-2 and are comfortable with that, then that's all there is to it. Lucinda's recommendations are guidelines only. She hasn't put anyone on a special "diet". We all have different dietary needs. I know that some of her suggestions - such as no carbs or juices - just didn't sit right with me. If someone wants to lose weight or something that's fine but it probably would have killed me so I didn't do it. I never really cut anything out of my diet, I added better things to it, leaving less room for the stuff that's not so good for me. I was never a coffee drinker anyway but I can understand the love of it. I drink tea, only 1-2 cups a day, but I wouldn't give it up totally either. Like someone else said here there are antioxidants in teas and they are not found in the decaf versions. You weigh the good, you weigh the bad.

This reminds me of the "black-and-white" thinking Lucinda talked about. Nothing is ever black and white, including this portion of the program. I see Lucinda's recommendations as she meant them and I don't stress over them (anymore). If I do eat sweets and I get jittery, that's OK because I know where it came from and it doesn't lead to total panic anymore. But I'm more conscious of what I do eat now and I take into consideration whether or not I want to feel jittery because I know what will set me off.

I don't add sugar to anything I eat or drink (unless I'm baking something that requires it). What about things like actual fruit. High in fiber, supposed to be good for you, but naturally high in sugar like melons, berries etc. I have a friend who's diabetic, and they were told not to eat tomatoes because they have a high sugar content. Are we supposed to eliminate things like this too? I'm running out of things to eat!. LOL

To each his own. I think that if you can stick to a cup a day you're probably okay. However, I'd be concerned if I were drinking it to help me make it through the day or get me going. That can easily lead to a second and then a third, etc. Coffee for me is toxic meaning long term it causes more problems with depression than it's worth. And I don't depend on it to get me going or keep me going. I think for some a cup is okay, just like alcohol, but not for me. For me, it is black and white.

It's simple! With too much caffeine and sugar, this will happen  No caffeine for me, then this will happen  I usually say moderation is the key, and everyone is different, we just have to find the amount that works for us, and as long as we are not overly anxious, etc.... . I've cut down greatly on caffeine, but have one in the a.m and feel better. Going totally without coffee, I'd be very :( Now I just have to get exercising. LoL. Good luck to everyone on this mission. Take care!

I was also thinking, if we totally eliminate these things, what happens if we encounter a situation where we want to have some? Only now, our bodies have lost their tolerance to them. So where before, a small amount might not have had a major effect on us, now it will. I know, I think too much. I have a very scientific mind and its one of the reasons I stress so much. I'm always analyzing things in my head to try and see all sides of an issue. I guess we all just have to decide based on our own ideas.
