Ok, so when your thoughts are stuff that can really happen and it is not far fetched how do you counter act that with a positive because it seems so fake...

Ex: I am pregnant and thinking that my baby might be born early or with a mental problem or something is something that GOD forbid could happen, and I try to tell myself that it is fine and that he is fine and I just can't stop thinking about it..

What do you do????

Why is that not far-fetched? Have you obsessed enough to go look into the number of birth defects as compared to the number of "normal, healthy" babies? Really - there are more normal healthy babies than babies with problems!

If you have any genetic predisposition to your baby having a problem though - wouldn't your OBGYN be testing for them? And that being said - how is worrying going to change that? It isn't.

But what is IS going to do is increase your blood pressure and cause you and your baby (as a result) to feel stress.

Pregnancy is a crazy hormonal time. Put up that mental stop sign every time you start obsessing about your baby's health...instead go do something in his nursery, or go for a walk, or read a book...something that you enjoy and that will help you stop obsessing.

It is natural for moms to worry about our children...to a degree. But worrying is truly nonproductive...and in the case of pregnancy...counterproductive.

If it were me and I couldn't stop obsessing, I'd listen to the relaxation CD A LOT...and tell myself that I need to stay calm, thankful, and positive for both me and my baby's sake.

You're going to be fine and so is your baby.

Blessings,
Dawn

Most of all you have to realize that you are creating these fears yourself and you can stop them. I like the idea of scheduled worry time. Plan a later time that you will sit down and deal with these worries. As suggested spend this time researching the statistics and causes of the birth defects and illnesses you fear. When you postpone your worries remember that you are doing this for the health of your child and that being calm will help protect your baby in your womb. Be sure to stop worry wen your scheduled time is up until next time. I hope this helps. It works for me.

Remember, you can stop those thoughts. Everytime you have the thoughts and worries, counteract it w/a positive one. It is normal for you to worry about having a healthy baby, but only to a certain extent. Focus on the positive because it is not only good for you but it will also benefit your baby too.
Jann, I like your idea of scheduled worry time, that is great, I may have to try that one.
