Hi, mom of many,
I know what you mean. I, too, am sensitive to perfumes, colognes, etc. They sting my sinuses, make my taste buds feel stinging and even swollen. I've even had trouble with burning eyes, sore throat, and headaches from other people's whatever-it-is. I'm concerned that I'm developing multiple sensitivites, and I do seem to have some pollen allergies.
At work I can't get away from the fumes of others' grooming products. I bought an allergy mask from a web site called Refreshingly Free, LLC. It doesn't always keep out all the fumes, but it helps. You might like to check it out.
I do not think that this is caused by anxiety. If anything, the opposite is true. I must admit that my sensitivity has resulted in some avoidance behavior on my part, e.g. I'd rather walk two miles to get groceries than get on a bus where I might be stuck with "smelly stuff". I LIKE the walk, anyhow.
Much cleaning can be done with baking soda, vinegar, and soap and water. I've been doing that for the past year and a half. I even make my own soap!
The bottom line, at least for me, is to avoid scented products and chemical household cleaners. Hope this helps you.

I used to watch alot of Court TV-I would record some of the classified experts testimony for my daughter who at the time was in college and has since been classified an expert in her field of criminal justice. She would learn from listening to other's testimony about what would soon become her job as well. Anyway, all that to say-in taping some I would become int. in some of the cases-2 of them in particular-the Yates trial and one that happened in Texas also-a mom stoning her kids-all boys to death-urg....anyway-she and Yates-both child murderers said they smell some odors before they got the message to kill their off-spring-it's called 'ole factory' and the smell of sulfa was present! So, when I started having prob with my nose-sev yrs ago-NO I didn't kill my son-! but I decided to do some searching on the subject-having infection somewhere is alot diff than becoming sensitive to perfumes etc. The smells are a warning-a body defense-sort of-it just depends on what you are smelling-remember the joke-"the 1st smella is the fella" or as we say in the south-"the first smeller is the feller". rothfl I am rotfl..........be sure to check out the smells-mine was due to a colon perforation I was having and didn't know it. I wished I had gone to the Dr. about the smells-I almost left this world during the surgery.
I care-thus I comment.

I have this issue as well but mine is due to migraines. A lot of scents, (floral, perfume, cologne, etc) can trigger a migraine for me and it stinks (literally haha). I have been called a blood hound because I can smell EVERYTHING! I just have a very heightened sense of smell....I'm forever asking people if they smell something...they usually don't but I always do and it usually drives me nuts until I find the source. I know allergies and asthma can happen over time and maybe this is the issue for you. I also have light sensitivity as well...normal light for most people makes me squint and I frequently have to wear sunglasses when its cloudy. I don't go anywhere w/o them.

Hi, everyone,
My current problems with "fragrance" sensitivity seemed to begin with having a certain person begin working here. She LOADED herself with something or other (and still uses it), and it was so strong it raised a choking miasma throughout the entire department. I'd not yet recovered from a bad cold, and that apparently triggered something. Thank goodness she uses less of the stuff now.
I'm also very noise-sensitive, and sensitive to bright lights/glare. An occupational therapist thinks I have sensory defensiveness. This means that my senses perceive as threatening stimuli that many people would hardly notice. It makes it hard to live in our noise-polluted, chemical-laden world.
Thanks for the suggestion re: vasomotor rhinitis. I'll have to ask my doctor about that one.

I have suffered with sensitivity to smells, paint/cleaners/perfumes. I had hayfever when I was young growing up. As I aged the sensitivities and symptoms have also increased.
My primary care MD sent me to see an allergist and its out I have allergies to almost everything except ****roaches and latex.
Maybe you should discuss with your Md for a referral to an allergist.
Hope this has helped a little. take care and God Bless,

I agree with BNA. I just started immunotherapy for allergies I didn't even know I had. Turns out over the last few years I was blaming my swallowing problems on anxiety. It felt like my food would just sit in my throat. I quit eating meat because I was scared I was going to choke. It was actually caused by a post nasal drip that made my throat bumpy instead of smooth and that is why the food would stick. Now i take zyrtec and my throat is healing. I ate a pork chop for the first time in 4 years. Yeah! I would definately check with an ENT. They can do a skin test and you may be amazed at what you might be allergic too. Good Luck!
