The past few days I have noticed that if I open my mouth wide and apply a little bit of friction that white pus comes out of my right tonsil. I have had a minor sore throat and a lot of drainage the past week. My glands are not swollen. No fever.
I have an appointment with my MD in the morning. I hope it's nothing serious and I hope it's not mono. I had mono and tonsilitis when I was 16 years old.

Has this ever happened to anyone? Could it be just part of all the drainage?

Thank you
JOHN

Sounds like strep to me. Left untreated it could cause some serious complications, but since you already have your doctors appt. you have nothing to worry about.

Thanks guys for your responses.

My MD didn't seem concerned about the white pus and put me on an antibiotic -- Augmentin XR

He said there were white spots and felt that I needed meds.

white spots = strep. I hope you feel better soon.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

White spots can mean strep but not always.....there are also many little pockets if you will in the tonsils surfaces and particles of food and such do get stuck into those little areas. They can cause bad breath and thats about it.

I get them from time to time....they resemble for me like little pieces of popcorn. I even asked a doctor in the ER once about them as he was doing a troat culture one broke loose and I spit it out and said what the heck is that and he said old food that got stuck in the tonsil. then he threw it out.

I was told that you can brush them although that would make me gag. so I use a qtip and a flash light and if I can see one I can swipe the qtip over it to loosen it and spit it out.

Gargling with mouthwash will help to loosen them and rid your throat of them as well......but they are a fact of life if you have deep creviced tonsils as I do.

Good luck

Could be tonsiloliths= Tonsil stones

They are harmless.

I have bouts with them when I have post nasal drip as this stuff gets in the tonsil area and cause the white stuff. I never used an antibiotic for them, just gargled with warm salt water to clean the area. Good luck!

I get white spots from time to time, and there was absolutely nothing wrong! My Doc said it was just food, or build up of some nature! and absolutely nothing to worry about :) I too try and brush them off!

I actually work for four ear, nose and throat specialists and have for 15 years. If this keeps occurring, get your tonsils out. I have my out when I was 11 and my husband was 30 when he had his out. It cuts sickness significantly and you do not have to keep taking antibiotics. We see this all of the time here and the surgery is very simple with a post-op recovery of about 7 to 10 days and then you are done. My husband says it was the best thing he ever did medically. I concur. The surgery is performed many times a week here in all ages.

Thanks for all your responses. However, after reading them I have to clarify something...

I know what "tonsil stones" are and I do get them from time to time. They are disgusting and the only way I am able to get them out is by using a cotton swab and my finger. I am convinced they are nothing more than a build up of food.

But I wasn't posting a topic about "tonsil stones."

I have been experiencing actual white pus that is coming out of my right tonsil and not from the crevice/hole. I noticed it several days ago after I opened up to check out my throat (I have been fighting a cold on an off the past month). It's not like a lot of pus is oozing out of my tonsil or anything like that ... it only happens if I keep my mouth open and apply some friction. Like I said, I have been a little under the weather with a lot of drainage. My throat is irritated but not sore.

So, I went to my MD a couple days ago and explained everything. I told him how concerned I was about the pus. He didn't seem concerned at all and thought it's probably an infection, maybe strep, and prescribed Augmentin XR (2 tablets ever 12 hours for 10 days).

Even now my throat doesn't feel right and I'm concerned that something might be seriously wrong. Here's something else that's on my mind... a few weeks back, I went out with someone and we started kissing heavily. I'm wondering if I caught anything from those few nights?

Again, I would appreciate some feedback here.

Something else I've been wondering ...

Maybe I'm just looking into this way too much. Perhaps we all have pus that comes out of our tonsils from time to time especially if we have drainage. Just a thought.
