Did Meds stop working or am I just over-stressed?

I have been taking Zoloft for a couple of years. It has always worked great for me. But the past few weeks to a month, I have been feeling pretty anxious again. However, I have also had ALOT on my plate. I run a successful fast paced business which I normally run with my husband. But due to growth of the business, I have been running it alone while he works in one of our other stores. We have had a couple of serious employee issues. I have been feeling used and taken advantage of by my sister all summer. We keep having unexpected financial complications the past month.....and on and on....Now I'm just worried the Zoloft isn't working. Logic tells me I'm just tired and overwhelmed. So does my therapist. But I just can't stop worrying that the Zoloft isn't working anymore and I'm just going to get really anxious again! I always wonder if the anti-depressent "poop-out" effect is even very common? Idk, sorry for rambling I'm just really frustrated. :-)

Hi,

Recheck stimulants in diet, truthful evaluation of increase in stress or may need increase in dosage, alter time taken by few hours later or sooner but confirmed by your doc, regular blood level should be fine.

Hi mydeffend,

The same thing happened to me. I was on the same anxiety medication for years and it worked just fine. However, the last couple of years have been really stressful and anxious for me and I notice that my anxiousness has reappeared and the same medication dosage isn't working as well as in the past.

I should say that the medication IS most likely working... it's probably not working as well due to the increased stress. My doctor is considering upping the dosage (at least temporarily) and we are going to evaluate this again on my next visit.

My therapist (as well as yours) also attributes this to increased stress levels.

So, you are certainly not alone in this situation. Good luck to you!

Even though Lorazepam is a benzo and should only be prescribed for a short period, my GP gave it to me for 5 years for anxiety. It seemed to work so well that I thought I had healed my anxiety,so I began tapering off it. Oh, dear!!! Even though I used the "Point of Return" (website) very modest tapering of only 5% per week, I was having big problems. My GP ended up doubling my original dosage (which was 1 mg twice daily) and now it works like it did at first. Yet, someday this monkey on my back must be dealt with since it is an addiction and that is also why I just began the CBT program. I want to be able to deal with anxiety in a mature manner and learn the skills while the medications are still keeping me relatively open to new ideas and learning skills.
