I'm so negative it scares me, I've never met anyone more negative than myself, there are 2 sides to ever situation IE glass half full half empty type of thing, well sometimes I can't even see the positive yet it's so blatantly obvious to everyone else, and being so negative actually brings nothing but bad luck which is scarey, have you noticed this?
Session 3 about positive though replacement is all well and good but sometimes I can't even see the positive,
any tips or help?
Are you / where u a very negative person?
Hi there!
As they talk about in the program, this is really a toughie. Trying to rid ourselves of negative thoughts takes a lot of practice. I try and do it in these ways:
Visualization - When I think of something negative, I try and switch it by thinking of something I like... I try and visualize a place I like to be or a picture of me doing something I love to do or a person that makes me laugh and be happy.
Distraction - I call someone on the phone; I start doing something I like (crossword puzzle, computer game); I sing or hum a song; anything to take my mind off the negative thought. I also like to watch old comedies on television, especially the old British sitcoms... they are a laugh and a half! I stay away from depressing dramas and movies.
Avoid The News - I try to avoid all the negative news on tv, radio, in print and online. This can be hard as it seems all news is negative these days. But I work at it.
Avoid Negative People - I try and surround myself with positive people and avoid negative people. For example, in a grocery store if I am standing near two people talking dire, depressing stuff, I move away from them so that I cannot hear them.
Meditation - I use meditation CD's twice a day and relax to them and also listen to music that I like. Meditation is a bit different from relaxation although they are both relaxing. This relaxes your body AND mind.
Postive Affirmations - I use a positive affirmation to start the day. Doing this trains your mind to think positively and not negatively.
Recording - Be aware of your negative thoughts and label them as negative. Then what I do is write down or record the negative thought. I carry an iphone ( but any little recorder will do) and when I get a really negative thought I record it. About 4 times a day I review them. I then note the mood I am in when I had the thought as your mood can affect your thinking and the type of thought you have.
All of this takes practice. It was hard for me to start and I didn't do all of these at once. I started with three (visualization, distraction and avoiding the news). I then added another and another. It has now become easier for me and I can hardly wait to do my meditation in the morning and in the evening (only 20 minutes each time).
All of my negative thinking hasn't vanished. I am still working on it. BUT, it is getting better and I am feeling a bit more relaxed, less stressful and less anxious AND less negative. I have a lot more to do, but I try every day. It's a work in progress.
I wish you good luck, and you are not alone, that's for sure! AND sometimes just LAUGH OUT LOUD for no particular reason at all. This gets the positivity streaming!
Take care!
Bob.

If I may add one extra to Bob's list. Start a gratitude journal daily. List as many positives in there as you can. When I initially started this exercise I could only list one or two. Examples: I made my bed this am, I got up before the alarm went off.
List any good thing and before long you will start changing your perspective. It worked for me.
Take care and God Bless
