So i've just started the program and today i've read the book and watched the jumpstart dvd. I'm going to listen to the cd for session 1 a little later, but for some reason i'm really nervous about listening to the cd for the relaxation session. I'm scared that i'm going to listen to it and become a "zombie" or something. I know that may sound stupid and i'm trying not to think about it but I can't help it.

You won't become a zombie. Dr. Fisher says the relaxation CD is an integral part of getting better--he says it lays down neural transmitters to help us relax. The relaxation CD has 3 parts--the first part is deep belly breathing, the second part is muscle relaxation and the third part is a visualization where you go to a waterfall. I like the deep breathing and the muscle relaxation--frankly, the waterfall part doesn't do much for me. But it won't turn you into a zombie or anything like that. While I am doing mine, if my husband wants to ask me something, he just comes in the room and asks me--zombies couldn't answer back:)If the phone rings and I am expecting a call, I answer it.

Sometimes, I have fallen asleep for a while because Lucinda has a very soothing voice. But rest assured, it won't do anything strange to you at all--I promise. This is just that stupid old anxiety talking and scaring you, so don't listen to it. One thing you will learn as you go on is that you can control what you think. It is hard, because we have a lot of old bad habits, but we can do it if we work at it.

Welcome to the program and if you have any more questions, just post them. There are lots of very helpful people on this site who can give you some good advice. It helps to know you are not alone.

Samcat has given you some excellent advice!!! I used to feel "out of control" if I just relaxed a little bit!!!

It is "kinda" like one is "scared" of letting go long enough to allow their body and mind to relax!!!

It sure did me a world of good to just "roll with the flow" and allow my mind and body to become very relaxed!!!

It may take you a few times, since your body and mind are not used to that feeling, but trust me, it is very healthy for you, and like samcat said, "You will not turn into a zombie"

The reason the waterfall didn't work that well for me was because they didn't have the sound of the waterfalls on there...LOL

I think I have to hear them to really get something out of them!!! Tee Hee!!!

I do have many "relaxation" CDs, that I have gotten over the years, and whenever I am feeling "stressed" sometimes, I will place those earphones over my ears, and just lie back and relax!!!

I wish you the best on your road to recovery!!!

What they are sharing is good stuff. I think what you may be asking is , is it hypnosis?
It's not. It's not even subliminal messaging. It's just tightening your muscles and then relaxing them while you listen to Lucinda. It's only 15 minutes and it's just calming really. I often play it while I am cleaning house or sorting laundry. She does take you to a visualization exercise which is to help train your mind to think of positive nice things about your surroundings if you get anxious.
You can even have someone like your hubby listen to it first with you if you are worried. I think you will really enjoy it.

I had listened to it and thats just what it is ..relaxing.....Lucinda pleasantly talks you into a nice resting of the mind and body...You are nice and calm. A great feeling. Your total awareness is still there. I had done these certain types of tapes many times and its very simplistic. I think you may be thinking of meditation....thats a little deeper. You feel great afterward, no zombie or spaced out feeling at all. creamcheese

Ms T Bones,

I think you have hit on a good point. The visualization part would be much better with the waterfall in the background. Waterfalls do sound relaxing. I have often wished that she had done it to the sound of ocean waves breaking--that is always so relaxing to me.

So Just Mommy, have you tried it yet and how did it go for you? Hope it relaxed you. If the idea of the CD still freaks you out, you can do something close by doing deep belly breathing in some quiet place where you can relax. Just focus on your breath going in and out and try to keep a quiet mind. That is a simple form of meditation, but people have used it for thousands of years and even our Western doctors are now saying how healthy it is for us. Anything harmless like this that reduces our stress level is good for us.

Thank you all for your input, I haven't tried it yet, but i'm waiting for my husband to come home and then i'm going to. I have my son here with me and want to make sure I don't zone out after listening to it. I'm sure I won't but I need to be sure. The program itself has already helped me out and i've just started it yesterday. So hopefully i'm on the road to recovery. Thank you all.
