Me too. It goes down after awhile. But it still sucks though. I have too take a physical once a year for my job. I dread it. Before I go into the office, my blood pressure is normal. 107/61. But as soon as they bring in the blood pressure monitor,BAM I get nervous. Pressure reads 150/92. Is there a seditive for this? I only feel this why in the doctors office. Other than that my life is carefree of stress or anxiety.

It's a good idea to take your blood pressure at home home 24 hours before your appointment and then write it down. That way they know what your level was at the same time of the day before you went in.

I just use a cheap Walgreens bp monitor. It's also fun and experimental to use it after you eat certain foods to see which ones affect your body in different ways.

Mobilizer1964,

If this is the only stress or anxiety you experience, you are doing great. I am not exaggerating about white coat syndrome. It is extremely common and if that is the only time your BP is up, you have absolutely nothing to worry about!!! Every doctor in the world knows about this syndrome--just explain to the doctor or nurse that this happens to you. You can do what Shifrah said and measure your BP at home, although sometimes those little devices go out of calibration, or do like Jill and have them take it after you calm down some. I would not take a sedative for something like this.

Rob (hubby) and I did the monitor at Walmart for a while before appt. but the numbers would always be way way off so we quit putting stock in the store monitors. Thats how I ended up just asking the nurse to take it twice. Once at the start and one at the end of the appt. It always went down to the healthy numbers. One nurse said she'd just wait till I was done with my visit and then come in at the end. That worked too once the initial DR time was over.

Hi Mobilizer, you really need a true BP reading when you are feeling normal, as in calm.

So I would not try to alter it with drugs.

I'd take it when I was calm to get the truest reading possible.

And if you take it at home, then take it 3 times in a row for an average, as home monitors aren't as exact as the ones in the Dr's offices. You can also try taking your pulse on your own. If you google it, you should get instructions on how to do so.

When you do take it, sit down and breathe normally for 2-3 minutes before-hand. It's amazing how different the reading come out after even walking around the house.
