Ok. My calves, ankles, feet have been swelling up one to two inches larger than normal after sitting for an hour or more. This started about a year and a half ago when I started my desk job, I also gained 50 pounds. Now, being a professional at panic, I've already had all the heart tests, scans, x-rays, etc. So when this started my doctor ran all kinds of other tests, all normal, and put me on a waterpill. Didn't work. I googled the symptoms, should not have. Now I think I have kidney or liver problems but I think my doctor did those, actually, she did do those tests. I'm so exhausted from fighting the battle in my mind that I just give up. I'm just starting to beat my panic/anxiety disorder and now I'm still having physical symptoms. I just want to yell from the top of a mountain that I don't care anymore, I'm done!!! Does anyone out there experience swelling after they sit?

Hello Dalton,
The only time that happens to me is when I take a 12 hour flight to Europe. Has your doctor recommended loosing the 50 lbs. you mentioned?

I wish you well!

Oh yes, I do.
It may help a little if you reduce your salt intake some.
Taking a walk might help too.
Surprisingly, drinking a little more water helps.
Getting a little stool to put under your desk for your feet will help a little also.
I've read that eating fresh parsley will help.
Drinking less coffee, if you drink it is another thing you could try.

Others may have more ideas. The main thing is that you can stop some of your worry since the doctors feel that it is not a result of some physical ailment.

Wish I could be of more help.
Best wished for good health!!

Yes,

Exercise and eat right. That's all you need to do to stop the swelling. I know that's not what you want to hear, but if you don't have any other health problems then what else could it be??

Dalton,

Some people experience swelling in their extremities more than others. If I eat too much salt or too many carbohydtates (starches, etc...) my fingers, feet and eyes swell. If I sit for a long period of time at the computer, my feet swell too.

When my weight was low and I was exercising regularly, this was very rare. Now that I weigh 20 pounds more- it happens alot. I know exactly what i can and cannot eat/drink to keep the water weight down- but i don't always do it. If I did, I'd be 20 pounds lighter. Dealing with my anxiety is one of the reasons why I am heavier- I eat to feel instant gratification. I am working on this !

I am a former personal trainer- so I do know what works as far as losing weight and losing excess water weight. If you keep you diet higher in protein and lower in starchy carbs, you will notice a huge difference.

If I go one day and follow a low carb diet- I can lose a ton of water in the first day. I know this is just water and not fat- but I FEEL so much better. No tightenss in fingers, feet, etc... No bloating. It's not easy , but your health is worth it.

Another thing is since you tend to retain so much water- this extra water does tend to raise your blood pressure a bit and you feel more stressed.

A good book to look into is "Protein Power" by Dr. Eades.

Water retention in our kind of body types is due to the wrong foods and not exercising. Like, someone mentioned - be sure to drink your water and don't drink sodas which has tons of sodium and chemicals that make you retain water.

I know, easy to say, not so easy to follow. It just depends on how bad you want to feel better. I know I do! :)

Thank you all for your opinions, I really appreciate it. The thing is, I don't drink coffee or pop. I walk 2 to 4 miles daily. I do watch my sodium intake. I've been doing what all of you said and that's why I'm so frustrated. I feel like I'm fighting a battle I can't win. But today is a new day and I will continue to fight. They have went down about an inch. I have to stay positive. Thank you all again!
