Dear hope22,
I am new to the program and after three weeks, I am seeing some improvement in this problem just as a side effect, I think.
Some things that have helped me over time have been a white noise machine, and also sleep supportive CDs (e.g. one by Dr. Emmett Miller, and another by Stephen Halpern). Not staying in bed and thinking about sleeping, has been helpful; I stop worrying, and just go with it, gently do mild, non physical, non-emotionally upsetting things...like getting on this chat session at 2:41 AM my time. Here I am awake, and I get to talk with you about this situation which makes me feel better. Good luck.

What worked for me was using various relaxation and positive affirmation CD's when I was sleeping. I set the cd player on auto play before I tucked myself in and it would just keep playing along until I got up in the am. There are a variety of these types of CDs on Amazon.com under relaxation, stress reduction, positive affirmations.

Chamomile tea also works great to induce a state of relaxation. Also, the more anxious you are thinking that you won't be able to sleep, means the more you won't be able to sleep. Lavender is also great at relaxing you and keeping you asleep. There are sprays you can use on your pillow, and lotions you can rub on. Also, when you find yourself awake in the middle of the night, if you can't go back to bed after 20 mins, get up out of the bed and read or do a relaxation CD. Great ways to get your mind off of not being able to sleep. I've also had some good results with Melatonin pills. They are all natural, so they don't have the next morning grogginess side effect or any of the other side effects you see with many sleep aids. Good luck and happy zzzzzz's.
