Hello, I am not familiar with Xanax Xr. Is it new? I take the generic form of Xanax(Alprazaloam) and haven't been offered Xanax Xr. or ever even been told about it. I take the Alprazaloam as needed, which usually amounts to 1 a day. I have found no noticeble side effects and 1 a day has been enough for the most part. Of course, we are all different so what works for one may not work for another. I'm interested in learning more about the Xanax Xr. myself. But I also take Effexor XR 150mg. which I have been on for 7 years. I weaned off the Effexor this summer under a doctor's supervision, and had to restart 2 wks. after I was completely off of it. It's alright though. My doctor is so kind, and she said to look at it this way, some people have to be on medications for the rest of their lives for different aliments, and that anxiety just happens to be my aliment, no big deal. God Bless!

Ask your doctor. I have panic disorder, gad, and ptsd. I take the generic version of xanax xr, 1 mg tablet at night. My doctor is tapering me: I now have an Rx for 2x per day 0.5 mg xanax xr, once in the morning once at bedtime. In two weeks, I'll take one of the 0.5 in the morning only. I also have 0.25 mg regular (non-xr) for panic attacks/ acute anxiety. For "maintenance" of this condition, the xanax xr (versus the regular, or non-continued release xr form) is good because it keeps the levels of the drug steady in your body since it has a short half-life. However you do build a tolerance over time (it takes more and more dosage to achieve the anxiolytic effect) so this medication is best used short term while you are under the care of your doctor, therapist, psychiatrist, and using the program. Good luck! By the way, I have also experienced relief of my symptoms with gabapentin (anxiolytic) and lamictal (mood stabilizer) which I also take daily. Ask your doctor since everyone is unique with the medications.

Davis....
I took Xanax .05mg as needed for awhile. I was very nervous about becoming addicted. My Dr. told me that if I took if everyday for about 3 weeks, then i would need to be weened off it by him. I also switched to Xanax XR 1mg... which stands for extended release. All the difference is, is that Instead of taking the regular Xanax twice a day, when you need it, the XR releases .05mg at the time you take it and another .05mg later on in the day. You can take the XR as needed too. But the same situation goes with that too. My Dr. said 3 weeks of that straight (everyday) and I need to be weened off. If I had ALOT going on some days and felt pretty anxious I would just take a XR and my entire day and a little of the next would be fine. Or if it was just a breif moment of anxiety like a panic attack I would just take the regular Xanax. At one rough point I did end up taking it for almost 2 weeks straight. And stopped and felt fine. And between my Dr and doing alot of reading, I found that if taken off the medication properly and NOT abusing it, addiction is not going to happen. Hope this helps!
