Wondering if anyone has thyroid problems that aggravate anx/dep? I am hypo thyroid, but recently found out that I am over medicated to the point I have hyper thyroid symptoms - which include anxiety, panic, shaking, jitters, sweating, loss if appetite, insomnia - al of which i am experiencing. I also take lexapro - but this will not affect thyroid. Any thoughts?

Hello Hisgirl
I have been on anti-depressants for 16 yrs and I was doing very well and feeling good about life again when about 4 yrs ago I got super anxious and panicky almost out of nowhere! I was having lots of restlesness and insomnia and nausea and sweating and my doc said it might be hormonal or menopause and had my thyroud checked out. It was supposed to be I think 0.5-3.5 and my levels were 9.98. Underactive. I had such lethargy and I was so sick. But they got me on synthroid and that didn't work for me so I take levothyroxine. It made a big difference for me. I went from tons of anxiety to less than half of what I was having. I could have started taking an anxiety med but chose to do this program instead since it deals better with they reasons why we panic. But knowing what I know about chemical inbalances from my depression. Sometimes we just need a little help to get started. I hope they can level out your thyroid for you soon. It will help so much.
Bless you lots and lots
Jill~

Hi Hisgirl and Jilly,

I have hypothyroidism too. I take synthroid for it and have for almost 20 years! YES, when your thyroid is out of balance it can definately affect your anxiety level. When I first had my thyroid checked it was over 14 and it is supposed to be in the range Jill mentioned. But even if it gets too low, even in range, I can tell a difference. Once you get it leveled, I believe you will feel much better. Take care.

Same here - I take levothroid like jillz, have for... 15 years now?

Another little whammy on the thyroid levels - if they get too high or too low, my period stops. Throwing a monkey wrench into the normal hormonal cycle just adds insult to injury on the mood front. :( But when the right dosage is set, should be fairly smooth sailing. Tho I write it down whenever I take a pill, since not correctly remembering whether I took it yet today, is a problem.

Thanks everyone fro your input! It really helps to know that others have had some of the same experiences.

I had been on levo for 6 years without much anxiety at all, when about a year and a half ago I started having major moodiness and anxiety. Turned out I had a nodule on my thyroid. Fortunately it was not cancerous, but 6 months later my thyroid went hypo again. So I switched to natural-thyroid. Within 8 weeks my TSH went from 8 to 1.5. Since then it has continued to go lower - right now it is .1 - no wonder I feel more jittery, anxious, can't eat a or sleep well.

Interesting how it all works. I see an endo in a few weeks - I'l keep you posted.

I will be praying for you. I know the period where I had to keep adjusting my med levels was so frustrating. I felt like a lab rat!!!Every 6 weeks I had to keep trying a new thyroid med level and It was so hard to be patient till I got stable. But as I age and get closer till meno than I will have to adjust it again probably and I am not looking forward to that. More donations to the vampire lab hahahaha
Take care and I will remember you in my prayers

I have been nursing my thyroid for about 10 years, on and off. I believe it caused me to stop having my period regularly at about 43. I am now 52 and I have been on natural thyroid med. for about 5 years. It is a balancing act and unless you find a patient Dr., very frustrating. It all works together and the hormones involved can cause your body to go haywire. Just saying..... I have been very anxious because my M.D. who I have been seeing for 5+ yrs. has taken down her shingle. In our area there are few Dr.'s who want anything to do with any natural, homeopathic, more gentle to the body techniques. I'm sure my migraines possibly are triggered by hormone imbalance. Anyways......:)it will be better when it's better! Blessings to all.

Question for jillzmind: Hi Jill, I have been taking synthroid for 15 years , 50mcg/day and my TSH levels ran from slightly above to 3 down to 2.008 in November 2008. In November 2009, TSH was 4.3 and my endocrinlogist said I could take an extra two tablets a week or just leave it alone if I felt OK. I left it alone, since I did not want to feel jumpier. I was just retested and now my TSH is 4.860 and the endocrinologist said I could increase it to 10 pills per week. I have been feeling a little more lethargic and constipated, although still nervous.

The question is this: Since you have adjusted your dosage multiple times and an underactive thyroid made you more anxious (I thought it wouldn't do that?), when you adjusted your dosage, did it make you more anxious? I took an extra 50mg pill last Thursday and felt much more anxious the next two days. I don't know if it was the medication or just my overreactive, worrying thinking causing the symptoms. What do you think based on your own experience?

Thanks for any advice you could give me on this topic.

Howdy Samcat :)

I couldn't take Synthroid since the smaller dose didn't change my TSH levels and when they upped it I went nuts and had heart palpitations and was dizzy and I felt crazy. So they tried me on Armour and that didn't help at all. Did nothing after a month. Then we went to the Levothyroxine which is what I am taking now. I started at 125 mcg and that made me have major heart palpitations and nausea and dizziness and headaches. It brought my TSH down to 6. something but made me nuts. So we went to 100mcg and now I am good. No side effects and my TSH is like 3.6 which works for me. And my Dr was happy with the numbers so we stopped there.
I hope that helps some. That whole process took months and It was very trying but worth it :)
take care,

Jill~

Jill,

Holy moley, you had quite an awful experience. Levothyroxine is the generic for Synthroid, so isn't it strange that Synthroid had that efffect and the generic didn't? These thyroid meds can be complicated to take--there are so many other meds that interfere with them, even supplements like calcium carbonate. And isn't it bizarre that a lower dosage brought your TSH down more than a higher dosage? I sure wouldn't want to be your doc--you sound like a complicated case:) I think if you are feeling fine, then 3.6 is good for you. I am really glad you are straightened out now!! What an ordeal, but you hung in there--I am proud of you!

Thanks for answering.
