Ok So I've been Diagnosed with OCD, and I've been prescribed Celexa, but I'm wary on whether or not I should take it. I read a side effect that said It might make the person depressed and they could end up hurting themselves or others (I have thoughts of harm to others so this didn't really sit well with me!) My Doctor said that those kinds of side-effects are rare and they mostly just put it there for legal reasons. But I notice on this forum or when I talk to other people with OCD they still have problems and worry about the same stuff...and then they have to wean off eventually and then you've got problems there too! I have a hard time believing that this can only be conquered with meds! Does anyone have some guidlines for me?? I'm more interested in just doing this myself and part of me feels weak sometime and wants the medication. I'm leaning more towards no medication.

I am someone who didnt want to take meds either and thought I could do it on my own, but things just got worse. I started Lexapro 5 months ago and soooo glad I did, it has made a world of difference, so yes meds can really help and give you your life back.

Meds are designed to control the symptoms of something, not to cure the condition. If symptoms are controlled, then you can begin working on learning about OCD and how to cope and manage the symptoms without meds. I highly suggest the OCD Workbook as well as this program. It's a great supplement. Sometimes the symptoms are so great that they need to be controlled before a person can begin the real work of recovery. These are just my thoughts! I wish you the best of luck!
