Hello everyone,
i have been taking (usually) 1 xanax (.5 mg) a day right before I go to sleep just to help me chill out a bit. Sometimes I'll only take half, it depends on the way i'm feeling or what my day is going to be like the next day, etc. i do NOT take it at all during the day, I have only done that once when I had a horrible panic attack. Last week I didn't even take a xanax before bed and felt absolutely fine and didn't even wake up in the middle of the night. Anyways, my question IS if I drank earlier in the evening/night could i then later take a xanax before bed? Basically I just want to know if it's really dangerous to take a xanax after drinking. Obviously I wouldn't be overdoing it, just a few glasses of wine...what do you think?

I would definately NOT take Xanax after drinking. Have you ever taken a benadryl and later drank? Same result. You'll sleep and that's a fact. Xanax chills you out and so does alcohol. Imagine what both of them together would do. I'm not trying to scare you but it's not something I would do. I work in a physician's office so I know what I'm talking about. Just pick one.

I take xanax also, and have read the information sheet they give you with it at the pharmacy. The paper says drinking is a no-no for sure. Luckily, I don't drink anyway, so no problem there for me.

I have done this before- had a few drinks and then took my xanax (a 0.25 mg tab). After I realized what I had done I freaked out and called the poison control center and told them what I had taken. They advised that I would be fine but that I had not made the best decision. You'd have to take a lot more than that to hurt yourself, but be very careful. The problem is that both are depressants and with too much of these substances in your body effects are additive- you can get more than sleepy- respiratory depression, very dangerous. Stick to using the xanax only when you really need it and certainly not when drinking. Like someone said above, pick one. It sounds like you already know what to do and already are using the xanax responsibly. Good luck!

When I first took Xanax I asked the doc all about it. He said takng a Xanax was roughing the same (effect) as having a drink. I'd say a few drinks of wine would put me on to sleep and I wouldn't need the other to sleep. Having both would end up making the # of drinks you had increase. Does that make sense? Like taking a Xanax would be like adding a couple of drinks to what's in your system. I've heard a drink an hour is the limit (without meds) for a woman so I guess your timing would be involved too. With them both being deprssants, you'd be more likely to counter the effects of your anti-depressant, if you're on one too. At least this is what I understood him to say.
Side note:
Great scripture for me to study today! THANKS!
