Biaxin Reaction or any other antibiotic reaction????

I have a history of OCD and anxiety. In May of 2006 I took Biaxin for a chest cold. I had a horrific reaction! Not only was I physically ravaged from this medication, I went into a state of psychosis. It took a year to get back to "normal" and even now I'm not totally the same. ANY kind of OCD or anxiety that I had off and on before the antibiotic reaction was magnified MANY TIMES by this drug. It was so incredibly awful! My life has NEVER been the same! Has anyone else been pushed into psychosis from this drug or any other antibiotic??

I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to you. This is WILD to think that something that isn't designed to react with our brain/moods and is "just" an antiobiotic could cause this severe reaction!

I was Rx'd Zithromax for a chest infection, I took my first dose late in the afternoon, the next day I felt nauseous....and had a rapid heartbeat, I called the Dr. and the pharmacist....and they both told me that this happens sometimes and that i should drink more water. The rapid heartbeat scared me....brought on panic attacks too, I felt soooo uptight it was horrible. I didnt take another dose, and was too freaked out to go back to the Dr. I have white coat phobia so when Dr's make me feel worse it gets more difficult for me to go to the Dr's office. I have been resting and using a steam humidifier with tea tree oil, ibuprofen for my sore ribs and ativan for the anxiety....so far I am feeling better.

Yes I experienced depersonalization while on Biaxin XL. The pharmacist made a grave mistake and the order was written for me to take it on tablet twice a day. Somehow the pharmicist misread the MD's prescritption and on my label it stated take 2 pills twice a day....So thats 4 pills a day!!

By the third day I didnt know who I was. I was transported by EMS to the ER and sued the pharmacy for what happened. I was not allowed to go to work for 2 months because of the mental state it caused. It was to the point that it had me thinking like a new born...I was like wow the sky is blue--in amazement.....

It caused me to hear sounds and I didnt know what was going on until i told a family member about the biaxin and the dosage--I called my MD and he said that was my prescription call 911...

I started seeing a new doc who explained that because of the error i was getting SEVEN times the amount I shouldve been getting!!! I am thank ful to be here and no permanent damages. Thank God!!

I know list that med as an allergy. I WILL NOT go near that med again!!!

I looked it up in the PDR (Physcian Desk REference) and it does alters ones mental state. So yes Biaxin can cause psychosis.

Dangerous to think that a simple antibiotic can do that.
