Hi Holly, did your doctor or pharmasist tell you that you can use ativan and Paxil together?
I resisted taking an antidepressant/anxiety medication for half a year. My doctor had given me ativan to take as needed which for me was anytime I needed to be in a public setting such as a meeting, so in my line of work was pretty often. After 4 1/2 months of using this drug without any real counselling she took me off it because it is habit forming and put me on Zoloft which i think is very similiar to Paxil. She told me that I could take an ativan as needed until the Zoloft kicked in which can take a few weeks. I used ativan once since then and I dont know if it was the combination of the two meds but I became very sleepy, could still function but would rather have had a nap. Since then I decided to just work this program and wait for the zoloft to kick in as after all that time on the ativan and not tackling the real problem I felt that I had wasted that time in getting better. I felt the effects for the first week taking this med, but for me it was very manageable and was kind of reassuring as I told myself that "hey this stuff is working". One of the positive statements that I am using to replace negative thinking is that this condition has a real underlying biological cause. I say to myself, hey your not feeling great, OK it is a temporary imbalance in brain chemistry. I hate taking medicines but looking at it from this point of view I am hoping for a medical drug assist while I go through the program. Afterall that time taking ativan without learning new skills I was right back where I started once I stopped using it.
I hope you have a mild adjustment to taking this med, it has been recommended as one of the better tolerated ones.

Hi again Holly, I just wanted to restate my initial question to you, Did you doctor tell you that you can take both meds at the same time? I want to share my experiences on this forum but i also want to be careful not to give bad information, just because my doctor told me that I could take ativan and Zoloft at the same time is not the same as saying that you can take Paxil and ativan together. You need to follow the recommendation of you doctor or pharmacist, they know what you can and cant take together, not me.

I am on 40 mg of regualr Paxil. I used to take Paxil CR but decided on going on regualr Paxil again. It is the only med that I feel normal on. I was also taking xanax, but I thew the bottle away as I fell asleep after taking only 1/2 a pill. Those suckers knocked me out. I am going back to the doctors to ask for Ativan instead. maybe that will prove to be better.
It should be perfectly fine for you to have an Ativan if you need too. Best of luck and Paxil has been a lifesaver for me!

I had to take Ativan for the first few weeks I started Paxil (actually, I took the generic). It's hard to figure out if you are truly having side effects or it's your anxiety b/c it takes a few weeks for the antidepressant to start working. Once it 'kicked in' and I started to feel better, I slowly stopped the ativan and continued with the antidepressant. Hope that helps.
