Hello!I was just wondering if any of you have weaned or are weaning off a benzo like for instance xanax?I've been on a 1mg dose of xanax extended release 3 times a day which to my understanding is a fairly high dose.I've been on this dose for over a year.I'm just kinda wandering what to expect when my Dr. starts weaning me off off them.I'm pretty worried about this.I'm afraid that I'll never give them up because I'll be to afraid that my body won't be able to handle the withdrawals.Any help with this would give me some comfort.Thank you guys!

I'm on Xanax also-1mg. 2 times a day and trying to wean off of it also. I'm trying to find an anti-anxiety medication that I can respond to that isn't a benzo so I don't have to rely on xanax and then eventually wean off the anti-anxiety medication. I figured that would help with weaning off xanax.

I heard that benzos like xanax should be used temporarily because you become tolerable to them. Ask your doctor about tapering off of them gradually and (and not abruptly)any other advice so that you will have minimum to no withdrawal effects.

Last summer, I came cold turkey off of a lot of Klonopin. I wouldn't do that again.
A couple of months ago my doc prescribed 2 mg of Xanax for sleep. I felt horrible starting around noon the next day- shaking, nervous, etc. I took a slow schedule and cut the dose by .5 mg each week. I finished 10 days ago. Very little problems. I think I was more irritable the days right after I cut the dose, but it was nothing worse than that time of the month. I gave myself permission to take .5 mg during the day if I was having a bad day and have done that twice. I did start smoking again, but I know I can cut that down when this stuff is gone from my system.
Take it slow- any improvement is progress, and a setback is not the end of the world. Have activities scheduled to distract you. Keep busy and don't dwell on it, but realize your body will be adjusting so you may not be the happiest camper on earth some days, but you will get there.
A walk does wonders when you are having that uptight feeling. Deep breathing and (sex) are great also- hope no kids are reading this, but it's the truth!

hi fear not, i have been on xanax for 9 months now. It has worked okay for me. I had it down to 0.5 only at bed time. But my life got really hectic, relationship, kids, finances etc. Then I had to start taking a half of one during the day and before bed. I went to the doctor yesterday and he changed my prescption to 0.5 in the morning and 0.5 around 2:00 pm and then 1.0 before bed. So im like what the heck i wanna go down not up! But, it is all my anxiety, if I distract myself and get active I can almost forget about the xanax. So i'd say only taper off with the help of your dr or psychologist. And worrying only adds fuel to the fire.I will be off of xanax someday, but right now it is needed so im going with it.Hope you find comfort

I'd like to know the solution. Pretty rough.
