Allergy Sufferers - please reply
Hi there,
If any of you are suffering from seasonal pollen/hayfever allergies, have you found any meds OTC that provide relief and no anxiety side effects?
I was recently seen by my internist, who is aware of my anxiety, yet he prescribed a nasal spray cortocosteroid, and two days into it, I've been having panic attacks daily. I finally figured it out, and when I researched on-line discovered, yes, corticosteroids can cause panic attacks!
Symtom relief is only provided by Benadryl for me without panic, but the sleepy side effects are hard to deal with.
Suggestions appreciated!
Lucie

Hi Lucie-
I deal with seasonal allergies, due to pollen, change of weather, etc. This week has been a little rocky for me actually--been sneezing a lot, and some drainage.
I have been taking Allegra -(without the D) for years now. I don't take it everyday, but I take it as needed. My docs say that I should take it especially before pollen starts so that I don't suffer as bad.
Allegra is probably the best thing for me. I have tried Allegra D, and some other meds, and I found that I can not take anything with a decongestant in it, so my docs refrain from prescribing me anything with decongestants in it, because it tends to cause panic attacks for me...fast pulse, anxious, etc. I can't take sudafed, nyquil or anything like that. Allegra has worked best for me. You should ask your doctor about that one and see what he/she thinks.
BTW-I am very sensitive to meds also, so I can only take a 1/2 pill of Allegra! It works for me though--a whole tablet was too much for me-made me feel weird, and like I was getting anxious, so I have taken the 1/2 tablet and that is perfect AND helps my allergies greatly!
Allergies are terrible...the sneezing, runny nose, post nasal drip etc is just the pits!
Good Luck!

Hi-
I use NeilMed sinus rinse. It's distilled water with buffered salt added. You rinse your nose and the junk just flows. It's kind of gross and really neat at the same time. You can do it as often as you want, and esp. after you have been outside by the pollen or before you go to bed.
I think you can buy the kit at any drugstore like Walgreens or CVS or Snyders or where ever you like to shop.
There is a kid size version too, if you need that for little ones in your life.
It helps prevent those dreaded sinus infections, as it washes away the junk and allows your sinus' to drain.

Is this like the ocean spray thing? Better? Worse? Those worked ok for me but this sounds better. Thanks.Originally posted by newrunner:

I cannot take any of those prescription medications (nasonex, allegra, etc.) b/c i got serious anxiety attacks in the past. Of course I didn't put two and two together and went thru so much crap!! I have been using Sinufix mist by Naturalcare for the last couple of years and I swear I have had no more sinus issues. Okay, once in awhile I will get a cold with a stuffy nose from my kids but I spray like crazy and I love this stuff!!!! It's kinda expensive, you can get it a Vitamin Shoppe or order online at Swansonvitamins.com. I tell everyone about it. Try it faithfully for at least a month, I think you'll be pleased.
Btw, you can use it as often as needed, no risk for dependency or anything and no side effects.
