For the past couple years I have woken up in the middle of the night with a fast and hard heart beat for really no reason I was not having a bad dream or even feeling anxious. This has happened about 4 or 5 times in the past couple years. I usually just take a xanax and then it takes it back to normal. I have talked to the doctor about it and they have even put me on a heart monitor and all kinds of stuff of course it didn't happen when i was on the monitor but they said there was nothing wrong. I am wondering if it is a stress related thing or something. It is really scaring sometimes because it will wake me from a sound sleep. Last night it happened again and it was weird cause i woke up and wasn't sure what was going on i didn't no if i couldn't breath or what was going on so i really started panicking and it felt like it was in my throat. I also have problems in the summer with really bad allergies i and i can't take a whole lot for them so i can get dizzy from inner ear stuff and stuff from my sinuses settles in my chest and i feel like i can't breath sometimes. I also get skipped beats that i get sometimes and those feel like they take my breath away. all of these things have been checked out but the doc but it doesn't really make me feel any better because they still happen and don't feel right. Does anyone have any words of help or has anyone had any of these things? Anything would help Thanx.

questions about fast hard heart beat
Hi Erin,
All this sounds very stress related and the first thing you need to do you did (your doctor). The second thing you need to do is accept that it is a part of anxiety.
In our sleep we dream and do not remember all our dreams but they can definitely cause anxiety or hard, rapid heart beat. A high blood pressure med will help this but you don't really have high blood pressure per se. If you choose this route, Atenolol is very helpful. Just take a low dose, however. That's all you will need.
Also, while we sleep it is common for us to experience shallow breathing. This, too, can cause us to wake "breathless" or with a pounding heart.
If you go to "Anxiety I will not fall asleep" under General Comments, you will get great ideas on what to do to help yourself relax before going to bed.
No need to be afraid anymore. It's just anxiety. It's no big deal and it will not hurt you. Accept it. You can learn to manage this very well.

I am so glad that you wrote this because the same exact thing happened to me last night. Mine started when I was laying down on my left side watching TV I noticed my heart skipping beats or going too fast I'm not sure how to describe it. I got up and got some water and sat up I was OK, I then went to bed and it happened again when I would lay down but finally could fall alsleep but was woke up soon after to my heart racing and my stomach tight. I went down on the couch but sat up for like 2 hours because I was scared it would happen again but when I finally fell alsleep I would wake again like 30 minutes later. I also felt or thought I felt short of breath yesterday so when this happened it really FREAKED me out. I do not take any meds but have taken GABA sometimes before bed because it helps me relax and I had one last night about 6 pm so I wonder if it was that that made my heart do this but I have also been to the doc about my heart and been on a moniter and nothing showed up. The only thing I can say to make you feel better is that you are and were not alone when this happened to you last night and that alone helps me relax a little. The ear thing also I have noticed like my heartbeat or a fluid rushing in my right ear for the past couple of days now too so I am not sure what that is either. I think because of last night I feel like i can't breathe today either but probably because I was soo scared last night and freaking out. Your not alone and I hope you feel better today. Bobbie
I too, have this sometimes and I wake up feeling real cold. It is amazng what anxiety
does to us, but they all sa you can't die from it, but sometimes it feels that bad. Does it
bring on any serious conditions? Mine seems
to be situational anxiety and is quite bad right ow, second week on zoloft and taking xanax
sometmes. I know everythng takes te ut this seems to not let up. I am waiting for my trial
program to cme and I did the anxiety program several years ago and know it really works.
My problem is I get these ruminating thoughts and
they are very hard to stop. SOmedays they don't stop and other days I have better control
of them. Life has been quite stressful, didn't have a car for five months and couldn't find someone reliable to buy one from and finally my mom decided to ship me hers and trying to find a place to live and I found that and working with my son who is an aolc9ohooick, so I guess it has fnally taken its toll on me. I just am taking one day at a time. Any suggestions I
would be grateful for.

Ok, are we all women over 40 here? I had this same heart flurry feeling is how I described it and I got it mostly at night when I would lay down. I started sleeping with pillows propped up against my headboard, so I could try to sleep sitting up, because that seemed to help. Then one night I went thru it and even sitting up I had it, so I had my husband drive me to the ER...at 2 am...naturally once I got there it went away. (safe place)
Anyway the reason I asked about the ages here is because
It turned out that it was caused by a lack of Magnesium caused by menopause..which of course triggered the panic and then the panic took over where the menopause left off !
SO I found out from someone that teaches at a hospital about Menopause Symptoms, writes in to a menopause board on AOL. searched Menopause and found out there are 35 symptomsShe said that the fluttering heart can be soothed by taking Calcium + Magnesium with Vit D. I started taking 1000mg Calcium with 500mg of Magnesium and the Vit D ALL in the same pills..at night and it stopped happening so it I stopped having panic attacks at night..now I pop a Cal/Mag/D during the day if I am fluttering. I'm no Dr. but I know it helped me. Hope you are feeling better today..

It's my understanding that more than 2000 mg of Calcium a day is too much so I just wanted to suggest that once you get your cal/mag/D combo you can also add a magnesium powder called Calm to get additional magnesium. The calcium uses that 500 mg up so more magnesium would be very beneficial for those menopausal symptoms. Start out slow with 1/4 tsp. for a week. If that works well (no loose bowel) then go to 1/2 tsp. then up to 3/4 tsp then finally up to 1 tsp. The bottle actually says you can go up to 3 tsp so you want to be sure that each amount you go with works well for you before increasing it. Each body is different in the amounts that it needs. It's a wonderful way to get more mag.
thank you guys just for letting me know that i am not alone. I am 31 which means i guess i could be going through pre-menopause. my lasted thing is i am trying again to get off of sugar and i am failing terribly. I say again because i have gone through the program before about 3 years ago and i did really good for a while and now i am falling back into my bad habits and i have been getting more and more of those palpitations or "skipped beats" and my doctor says they are going to be worse if i am drinking a lot of caffine or sugar or salt or what ever and i kicked caffine a while ago but i have been drinking regular iced tea and i have been eating and drinking lots of sugar and i just can't kick it its awful any suggestions????
