I rarely watch the news because it is not very positive but it happened to come on when I wasnt paying attention. A story caught my attention (I should have changed channels) but the headline was about someone who went on a shooting spree in Alabama. I began getting very anxious. I started thinking what could have been going on in his head and all the what if's. I was wondering if anyone else out there experience this. If I see something on the news like that I seem to obsess over it.
Note to self- No more watching news. LOL
Does anyone else watch the news and get anxious?
Hi-
I remember feeling anxious when I was a little girl and my family would gather around the TV in the evening and my mom would always have the channel to a network series or a movie or something that always had to do with doctors and autopsies and murders, etc. I HATED it and would feel anxious, but didn't know anything about this way of life (anxiety) and was not comfortable enough in my relationship with my parents to ask them to turn it off or to talk about it, etc.
I get anxious sometimes if I hear a news story or read something. It used to freak me out, but now I realize that because it is so infrequent, that is why it is NEWS. And the more gruesome the story, the more viewers or listeners they can shock into listening. It's all about money. And just because the bad thing happened to someone else, doesn 't mean that it will happen to me. My situation could be totally different.
I think you are wise to lay off the bad news for a bit. Why put yourself thru the wringer? When 9/11 happened, I didn't watch 1 minute of it on TV. I had a sister living in NYC at the time and my nerves were already pretty high strung. So- if I did anything, I read about it in the paper. That way I had control over the amount of input I received, and I could shut the paper and ignore it if I wanted. It seemed to work better- the paper is quiet and calm and isn't screaming headlines and flashing lights at me.
Hope you have a good day.

I agree, don't watch the news for a bit until you are into the program and can put it in perspective -- that is -- live for the moment, as they say.
I don't watch t.v. at all, but remember having this problem as well, and also as a child as newrunner did. Presidential addresses used to scare the poop out of me! Why? Because my parents would say "uh oh, Carter is giving an address, must be bad news!" Or whatever.
I listen to NPR in the car, and like this because you hear the news, and some of it is bad, but it is without the hype, the less-than-five-second camera angle changes, and pictures. They also mix it up, so you've got news, and again some of it is bad, but the next story is on the increasing butterfly population in some tropical paradise, or a book review.

I tend not to watch the news anymore. I have laid off of watching these hyped-up programs for quite some time now. I do listen to a lot of radio, especially my local "talk radio" shows and "call-in" shows. And, music, lots of low-key music (not the hip hop and rap stuff). There are lots of things I do now rather than watch the television news. I do have my programs on tv that I watch ( and not the mish-mash of crime dramas), but news is not one of them. Take care. Rob.
We are bombarded by so much negativity that no wonder so many people are depressed! I used dive into the drama and watch some catastrophe over and over again on the news until I realized how bad it made me feel.
It's a sign of sanity when one feels the pain but doesn't go out of their way to immerse themselves in it. ZMany of us that are depressed are more sensitive which is a gift if we can learn how to feel without the pain taking us hostage.
I think realizing how sick the news can be is a good sign of your wise soul shining through, Naustin!
