Absolutely. I think that we try so hard to stay in control, that we stifle so many of our emotions that just need to get out. When we finally let our guard down, stuff just starts pouring out that we've been holding onto for so long. I think it's very healthy to let those old emotions out. It's a cleansing of the mind.

I had similar reactions when I first started the program over a year ago. The relaxation tape and others that I used would bring out a flood of emotions and images at the time. Things I thought had been buried for a long time. The journaling at first had the same effect. I learned after progressing through the program that I could redirect these emotions in a proactive way to make changes instead of ruminating and dwelling on them like I had in the past. The emotions that came up gave me much insight, and once I stopped being afraid of them I made some very good progress.

Another thing I wanted to mention on this subject is that I find when I keep my emotions bottled up, the feelings still leak out but in the form of anxiety. So isn't it better to let out the real feelings, whether they be feelings of hurt, anger, guilt, embarrassment, or whatever, and deal with them? Having it leak out as anxiety is both nonproductive and more unnecessary pain.
