Has anyone heard of the possiblity of an inner ear dyfunction being the cause of phobia's anxieties?
I am reading a book called "Phobia Free" by Harold N. Levinson, M.D. Has anyone else read this book or know anything about the inner ear problems being a possible cause for the anxiety and/or phobia problems?
I was glued to this book while reading it because the author described so much of me in it.
God bless,
Susan

Hi Susan,
I know that I get fluid build up in my middle/inner ear alot due to allergy and sinus issues and then my tube that goes from my ear to my throat swells shut and the fluid in my ear causes me to be dizzy or off balance. I have been to 3 different ENT drs. for it. And YES it does cause anxiety. I've been having it the last few days, along with skipped heart beats (which have also been checked out) and I get anxiety with both. I know, at least in my life, that sometimes real physical conditions can cause anxiety. I'm learning to live with it when it comes and not let it throw me into more anxiety. Sometimes it is a moment by moment battle. What helps me is knowing my life is ultimately in the hands of the Lord and He is in control. And I know He doesn't want me to live my life afraid. It takes work, sometimes more than I feel like doing :p but I want to be free completely, so I keep on. Weather changes effect me alot too and I live in Indiana so that makes life interesting!
If you are dealing with these things, hang in there. Know that it is not harmful in anyway.

Thank you for your reply SimpleTruths, I also have trouble with weather changes for three reasons. It affects my arthritis, raynauds condition, (cold weather), and my anxieties really hate change. The more I read out of this book the more the more it made sense to me. I am trying to not let my hopes get to high as far as maybe this being the root of all my anxiety problems but it sure would be a blessing to have something physical to make sense of why anxiety has ruled over most of my life.

Well Sit-N-Spin that's ok if you feel that way but I disagree as I know from experience that inner ear problems increase anxiety. I agree it may not be the sole cause of it but when you are dizzy or off balance, it definately makes you anxious. I've had to grab hold of walls in the ER halls before due to imbalance and it is a VERY SCARY feeling.
And I agree there is alot of books out there on anxiety and other things too but it is an individuals choice what to purchase and read. Different books help different people.

I agree with you SimpleTruths. This book was so interesting I could hardly put it down. It made so much sense. I admit I am an avid reader of anxiety type books hoping and praying to find just the right book that will tell me why I am the way I am. Most of the books I have read over the years have never cut me to the core like this one has. It really makes sense so I am not going to put this one aside like I have so many others. I am going to check into this further to see what I can find out. I think everyone would find this book as interesting as I do.

I have an inner ear disorder...so they tell me anyway...I didnt know much about it until I started to read up on it and inner ear problems can and do cause Panic/Anxiety and Depression. Im currently going through inner ear therapy to hopefully help...Hasnt so far but I'm holding on to the hope that it does.
Also wanted to mention that I went to a ENT first and they said everything was fine so my doctor sent me to an inner ear specialist and he ran a bunch of test and said "yep you have an inner ear problem"....for the life of me I cant remember what he called....So i what start with an ENT first, If they find nothing I would go see a specialist.
