I had the stomach flu after Christmas and after that I had bad pains in my chest (probably indigestion) that Tums helped with. Then today I had uncomfortable feelings in my chest on the left side (I'm left handed) that I guess has had made me anxious all day. Now it's 1:30 in the morning and I can't sleep because my heart is racing and I'm nervous. Yes, I've thought about a heart attack and every bad thing it could be...figures....I'm probably doing a great job aiding my symptoms and problem.

I'm 34 and every time I have this feeling (comes and goes for 12 years now) it's after some kind of "ill" or physical pain or sickness I have/had. Of course I'd go to one doctor to another who would tell me I'm fine or have work done to prove it but it's like my mind is STUCK in believing something is wrong.

Does anyone else get chest pains from worrying about a current or previous ill? Does anyone else's mind get STUCK in believing something is wrong due to body symtoms that won't pass?

Hi Jacqueline,

It sounds normal for someone who struggles with anxiety for this to happen. I've dealt with it also, many, many times. I try to just let my body heal and get better and rest. Then I am usually stronger to resist the thoughts that try to come in and stir up more anxiousness. I hope you get to feeling much better soon.
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Hello Jacqueline I bumped up the mind and body symptoms thread for you to look at so you can see and read that many of us have physical symptoms caused by and sustained by panic and anxiety and it's a vicious cycle because we obsess over the body it causes us anxiety and our anxiety makes the body sypmtoms worse. So the key it to manage and stop the negative "what if" thinking.Way easier said than done For Sure!! But practice make perfect or should we say "better"
Check out the list

Take care

Jill~

This is very common. I always think that
I have something wrong with me. I have chest pains also. I have had them for also about twelve years. My Doctor always tells me I'm okay but I still feel as if I'm dying. The chest pains are from the muscles usually being tense when we get stressed. If the stress lasts for awhile then I get costochronditis which is basically inflammation of the muscles in the chest by your sternum. I am only 33 and know I'm a hypochondriac. I have been dealing with a sore throat for about three weeks and keep telling myself that it is pneumonia or strep throat. The big thing in this is that we need to learn positive self talk. We are okay and will get through this.

Your chest can get really tight from hunching your shoulders when you are stressed. Try a stretch to stretch out your pectorals. It will hurt and feel like it's pulling like crazy, but it's probably what you need. You can google it and you'll find some for sure. Remember that stretching is not a one time thing- gradually you will get lengthened out.

Also- I used to have chest twitches and pains and all that stuff. About 15 months ago, my husband and I started going to a personal trainer twice a week and we always work on postural muscles- meaning the upper back muscles. If you get those strong then they pull your shoulder blades down and back and they balance out your strong pectoral (chest) muscles. Tada-- I have not had the pain for a long time. It has also helped with a stressed out neck.

Good luck. Take one illness at a time and let it be. It doesn't automatically have to equal a downward spiral and certain death. Sometimes it's just the flu. I extrapolate myself, so I can see how you fall into this.
