Well, I went to a heart doctor and had an echo and was diagnosed with mitrial valve prolapse. It supposedly is not a big deal. I don't need medication or have to change anything. OH MY GOD! I am about to freak out. I don't know what this is exactly and am worried it is going to kill me anytime. HELP!!!! Does anyone know anything about this?

I've had mitral valve prolapse for years. I freaked when they first found it also, but so far nothing horrible has happened. Too tell you the truth I completely forget I even have it.

Well, welcome to "the club." Ha! :) I have MVP. I was diagnosed with it about 10 years ago, but had symptoms from it ever since I was litte -- like heart flip flops, tachycardia, chest pain, and even panic attacks. As you can tell by my intro to this message, it really is no biggie. It is all benign, though. It is a very common thing and nothing to worry about. Your heart is healthy. It even sounds like you have such a minor case of it, like me. The important thing to do is get enough rest, stay hydrated, exercise, and cut out caffinated drinks and foods, and minimize your sugar intake. All these things can affect the symptoms of it. There is also a great book about it called: The Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome/Dysautonomia Survival Guide by James F. Durante, Cheryl L. Durante, John G., M.D. Furiasse, and Phillip C., M.D. Watkins. This book was awesome and helped me understand more of what was going on with me -- for a long time it even helped me stop worrying about my health because I was finally educated about my symptoms and why I was having them, and what to do about them. Also, there is a website for us MVPers called www.mvpsupport.com. The important thing is that you are going to be ok. You can still live life to its fullest; MVP can be just a minor inconvenience at times -- just like anxiety! Please feel free to contact me anytime if you just need to talk. Take care! Hugs, Wiskers: MVP Club Vice-President ha! :D

I too have MVP and SVT since my late teens early 20s. The MVP is harmless. Something like 1 out of every 5 women have it. It will not harm you. The most I had to do was take antibiotics before dental procedures. There is MVP with regurgitation which is a little more serious, but still will not kill you. SVT is a different monster. It too can be non life threatening or life threatening depending on your type. This is when your heart beat increases to a dangerously high rate. I have this as well as MVP and will be undergoing a procedure to fit it this Friday. Hang in there, if MVP is your diagnosis, you are among millions of healthy women with it!

I was also just diagnosed with MVP about a week ago and I am nervous wreck! I get the heart skips ALL day long with no break. I feel as is my heart is going crazy. I just want to ask anybody out there how do you cope with these horrible symptoms? I can't imagine myself living like this for the rest of my life. I'm soooo scared. My doctor gave me Toporl. Iv'e been taking it for the past four days with no relief. Does anyone know how long it takes before the medication starts to make a difference? I am really really scared!
