I had a few people suggest I might be bipolar. I took this as an insult, of course.

But after looking at all the ruined relationships in my life because of my temper, I really have to step back and wonder if I am! My temper can explode from 0 t 90 in a second. It happens all the time. I have lost the respect of coworker, and relationships of family members.

How do I get checked?

What are your symptoms? Also remember only a skilled therapist can give you a diagnoses.

Hi Songwriter,
Have you been to a doctor, or therapist? They are the ones who can let you know.
Just because you have a temper, it doesn't mean you are bipolar.
My Mother-in-law is bipolar, I have never seen her lose her temper, and I have been married to her son for 30 years.
Now, my Father-in-law is a different story, he has a temper like you said, you have. His temper can explode from 0 to 100 in a second. It is either his way, or no way, which has cause a lot of hurt feelings.
Bipolar people, are either really high in their emotions, or really depression. Meds, even them out. They also spend a lot of money, talk a mile a minute, don't sleep, etc;. When they hit bottom (depression) they hit hard.
Here is something I copy and paste:

People with bipolar disorder have two different mood extremes: “depression” and “mania.”

Depression is a low kind of mood. During an episode of depression, people feel sad or empty and lose interest in doing things that they usually enjoyed. It’s also common to be slower in thinking and movements. A person may have less energy and need more sleep. They also may have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
Mania is a high mood. During a manic high, people feel unusually great. It’s common to be overly talkative, have lots of energy, and need little sleep
An episode of depression or mania can last for days, weeks, months, or sometimes even years. A person with untreated bipolar disorder may have more than 10 total episodes of depression and mania during his or her lifetime.

Usually people first notice they have symptoms of bipolar disorder when they are teenagers or young adults.
Women with bipolar disorder may have more depressive episodes than manic episodes, while men are more likely to experience a manic episode. Men are more likely to start with a manic episode whereas a woman’s first episode is usually a depressive one.

To put your mind at rest, if you haven't seen a doctor or therapist yet, I would go and see one.

Thank you for the comments?

All I know is my explosive temper had caused me a lot in my life and it has to stop. I am 48 and can't go on ruining relationships. Believe you me, it's only a few meltdowns that ruin what was a good relationship. In other words, it takes just a little to ruin a not. What does the Bible say? "A little leven levens the whole loaf?"
It's a shame. I will get help.

Songwriter, you are on your way!!
The first and hardest step is to come to terms with a problem. And you have.
You can beat this!!
When you can quit blaming others and look within you have won more than half the battle.

You will find a good doctor and you'll be able to work this program.
At 48 you have a lot of life left.

I was so happy to read your last few posts.
You are on your way!!!
Wishing you the very best!!!
Will certainly say a pray for you every day.
MaryJane
I had to battle a temper also.
And I took everything personally and the wrong way along with it.
