I learned my lesson though; make sure that if you're standing, your knees aren't locked! Move around a little bit and focus on breathing; 2 in and 4 out and you should be fine. It also helps if you take a bottle of water with you. I find that when I feel like I'm going to pass out, it's because I'm also a bit dehydrated. :)

Hello,

I feel the exact same way in Church! I feel like everyone is looking at me (especially people that I know), and then the anxiety and panic starts. My hands drip with sweat and I can see people wiping off their hands after the sign of peace. When it is time to kneel in church, my legs and my butt start shaking and trembling out of control. Sometimes when I stand my whole body will start to shake as well. I know I should not feel this way in church, but it seems like it is getting worse. On certain Sundays it will be so bad that I have to go to another church far away where I don't know anybody. Does anybody else feel this way? If so, can you offer any helpful tips to get through this?

Rev Christopher - Your post did not say you actually passed out. You need to welcome these sensations in (when you are ready). You are fighting. The more you fight the stronger the sensations feel. You won't pass out. It just FEELS like you will. Carolyn has recommended using your breath. This will regulate your breathing and help with the lightheadedness, but you also need to welcome the sensations in each and everytime, until you are no longer afraid of them.

Hi ChrisL,

I was having anxiety before and during church tonight and I told the lady sitting next to me that I was struggling with negative thoughts and gave her a couple of examples and she said that she has trouble sometimes and if she gets up and moves around sometimes that helps and at church she fans her face to burn off the energy and to cool down and sometimes she scribbles on a paper, anthing to distract herself.

Hope this helps.
