That's scary, what a blessing you are okay. I have genetic high cholesterol and a history of heart attacks at a young age in my family. So I know the fear!
I had to modify my diet to make somewhat of a difference because my cholesterol's so stubborn. I have been a vegetarian for about 10 years, and am working on the vegan part, because dairy is like liquid meat really, it may be just as bad or worse than animal foods for the heart and arteries.
You probably already know about diet, but here are some sites to check out...
Dr. John McDougall
http://www.drmcdougall.com/
it's a heart disease reversal program (I'm sure you heard about him)...he's a medical doctor and has branched out into his own health practice.
There's also Dr. Pinckney's plan, there's a free handbook you can download here...
http://heart.kumu.org/
And then there's Dr. Dean Ornish
http://www.pmri.org/spectrum/
I have been doing the raw food route, which is also cleansing, but some people find that too 'extreme' for them.
I hope that was helpful and you don't mind that I posted these links!
All the best to you on your journey!
