Difficulty Swallowing due to Stress

Post by scienceteacher » Fri Jun 24, 2011 10:31 pm

When I'm stressed, food gets stuck in my esophagus, and I easily throw up. I've had to get it dialated before, and my gastroenterologist said I have acolasyia ...at 40 and only when I'm stress, I don't think so. Does anyone else have this problem?

I remember Caroline talking on a tape about feeling that she forgot how to swallow. maybe she'd have an idea.

Dear scienceteacher: I have had the same experience in the past. I felt like the food I was eating was not going down
my esophagus. I had the feeling of a big lump in my throat. I took my pills and vitamins each day and I always felt like
the pills were not going down my esophagus, but getting caught in my throat. This made me panic in a bad way ! Many
panic attacks followed, anxiety, stress, depression, a breakdown and hospitalization. But it took one last trip to the
hospital to ease my fear. I had a test at the hospital that showed what I was swallowing WAS actually going all the way
down to my esophagus and NOT getting caught in my throat. I saw a Speech Therapist who did the test and the test
was something that I could see on a screen; pure proof that it was not something physically wrong with me. I was given
a variety of foods / pills to eat and I watched each bite of food or each pill go down my throat on the x-ray type screen.
I cannot tell you how good this whole test made me feel ! ALSO, it took many trips to the hospital to even realize that I
WAS having PANIC ATTACKS. I had no idea that I was having was a PANIC ATTACK. The same thing with the food
swallowing problem, I had no idea that it was related to panic and anxiety and stress. I also had MIGRAINES around
the same time, and those were created by the same things. Fortunately I have not had a PANIC ATTACK for a long
while. I no longer have those terrible MIGRAINE HEADACHES. And I know, I know FOR SURE, that my food is
NOT getting stuck in my throat and that I CAN swallow. Maybe you need a second opinion from another doctor regarding
your condition ? Don't give up and take action immediately! Keep in touch to tell us how you are feeling. Have you
been losing a lot of weight due to the swallowing problem ? I lost 60 pounds back in 2006 because I could not eat !
Keep working on the Program and you WILL feel better. Lynda Lu

I have had difficulty swallowing the past few years. There was a time it got really bad. I went to the doctor...
It did go away in time. It comes and goes ever so often.
You might want to make sure no medication is adding to this problem. Also, loss of weight can help the problem. I wish you the best. It happens to a lot of people.
