I'm going in for a double mastectomy this Friday. I could have opted for just a lumpectomy with radiation, but the constant wondering if it was going to come back or show up in the other breast would have me back in panic mode in no time. Even though scientific study is inconclusive and shows no great difference in recurrence between lumpectomy vs mastectomy, the people I have spoken to, who have had breast cancer and also have the experiences of others in their support groups have found that those who only had lumpectomies had a greater instance of recurrence. Removing all breast tissue seems to the be general view for peace of mind. I would always be waiting for it to return. I value my life over my appearance. I'm sure I'll have to have chemo after surgery but don't know how much. I guess they won't know that until they test what they take from me and see if the lymph nodes are affected. I'm surprisingly calm at the moment. I'm sure that will change on Friday. Being put under anesthesia freaks me out. They said I would be coming home the same day though. I would have thought they would keep me in the hospital a day at least, but my surgeon's assistant didn't think so. I think I'm scared on the inside though, it just hasn't come out yet. I guess this program is working although I have kind of slacked off on doing it since this happened. All my doctors so far keep telling me I'll be just fine. Isn't that what they have to tell their patients? I want to believe them. But I believed I was feeling better than ever before I got this diagnosis and apparently I was wrong. I don't know what to think anymore.

I've had nine surgeries throughout my life. For many of them the doctors have told me that I would be just fine. But, not for all of them. I had my colon removed nearly nine years ago...and, I HAVE been fine since. However, my doctors told me prior to surgery that they had no idea what they'd find and how the surgery might ultimately go. So, try to put some faith in your doctors that they are not only capable and competent but also that they have been honest with you about your prognosis. Remember, to some extent you have the easy job on Friday. You lay there, they help you get some sleep, and they have the work to do this time. You'll have work afterward but, Friday will be fine for you.

I've been reading a lot of posts from different breast cancer forums and it all varies. There are a few posts from people who have had the bilateral mastectomies, and been out of the hospital with in six or seven hours. Some had to stay for two or three days. I guess it all depends on the individual. It seems the hospital actually would rather the patient go home sooner to avoid the possibility of hospital borne infections. The people who stayed longer either were nauseous/vomiting from a reaction to the anesthesia, or they had reconstruction at the same time, or other factors. A couple of people were up and about their business in a few days, one even said she was hiking in the mountains while her drains were still in. Others took weeks before they could move. Everyone is different. Knowing my stubborness, and not liking to be told I can't do something, I'll probably be up and about quickly. Like my doctor said to me today "attitude is everything".

Rhass:
My prayers will be added to those of others.
Shall pray that you keep your courage intact.
For attitude does play a big part in recovery, I'm sure. I've never been through anything like that. My thoughts will certainly be with you on Friday. I'll be wishing you so well!!!
May the Lord be with you!!
