Hi there,

Psycholgists cannot prescribe medications therefore a general practitioner or a specialist (psychiatrist) would be needed for that.

As far as which one to go to, if you have a good family doctor, he/she can prescribe something based on your symptoms. Most people get their medications from their family doctor. I don't know if you can make an appointment to see a psychiatrist without being referred by a family doctor in any case. But, of course, a psychiatrist should be more familiar with symptoms and medications particular to symptoms of anxiety and depression. Unfortunatley also, many psychiatrists like to prescribe medications.

There is another option. You could go to your local hospital walk-in clinic or emergency room and they may refer you to a specialist. I would try a good family physician as they are quite familiar with all of the medications for your symptoms and he/she may refer you to a specialist if they think you need to see one.

Good doctors today, general and specialists, will not prescribe any medications without a thorough interview with the patient first and perhaps trying other options.

It's too bad that the psychologist route didn't work as that is an excellent route to take. However, many people need some help even if just to take the edge off their symptoms while they work on their problems. Unfortunately, a psychologist can't help in the area of medications.

This program is very good. I would try it if you haven't already. Good luck!
