I have struggled with some obsessive thoughts for the last month. I cant seem to get a handle on them. I have tried blocking them out of my mind but it doesnt seem to help. Does anyone have any good advice as to where to start?? And what really does help with these kinds of thoughts. Thanks. :)

The content of your thoughts is not important. Our minds skip from one obsession to another in a matter of seconds sometimes. What is important is your resistance to the thoughts. Stop blocking the thoughts out. This never works. It is short term and the thoughts always come back - as you have found.

Start to welcome them in. "You are welcome here. I've been expecting you." And, truly and sincerely ALLOW them to be there. Tell your mind that it's OK that these thoughts are here. And, then get on with your day. Practice this over and over again and you will see a major difference. You are changing your attitude toward your thoughts (and you can do this with your feelings as well.) Be patient. The mind likes a good fight, but don't give it one. Just keep welcoming your thoughts and feelings. Persevere, you'll make it.

I have just recently been introduced to this program. My obsessive thoughts have been overwhelming, the advice given makes alot of sense, but the panic it creates sets me over the edge, is there any more that can be done?

Sherm - Be willing to feel that anxiety. It doesn't have to turn into panic if you are willing to feel it. Welcome it, just like you would welcome any feeling. I know it's not an easy thing but it will be what helps you to reach the peace you seek.

Hi,

I have OCD and can have some really pretty scary thoughts, like hurting someone and all sorts of other things. One thing that a therapist told me once is that the fact that if freaks us out so bad shows that we are the least likely to follow through with our thoughts. If you were really going to do those kind of things it would not freak you out. You wouldn't be saying what is wrong with me. Just tell yourself it is just a thought and it will pass, I am not going to act on it.
