Following my thread about anger It has been suggested I take meds. I never have taken them before, even through my darkest days of anxiety I pulled through without meds which included 6 months of derealisation which was not easy. I have been scared of meds, I have read to many horror stories, including sucide, and I will admit I have had thoughts like this before, But not that I wanted to kill myself, more that I was scared I would. I just don't know what to do? From the moment I start taking meds I know I will bring the side effects on myself as I am so clued up on the side effects.
Any advice very much appreciated
Ok, Should I Go On Meds?
Are you currently in therapy for your depression and anger? I think cognitive behavioral therapy, which we do some of through the program is wonderful too.
My only thought regarding the medication is that if your anger is so out of control, perhaps your irritability could be lessened with medication. Of course, I would definitely speak to a doctor regarding that.
I appreciate your desire not to be on meds as I think so many of us want to steer clear of them. If you're not in therapy - and maybe group therapy for anger management, this might be the first step.
I also know that medication is not the only answer. I see it as a start to recovery when things have gotten well out of control. You know best how out of control things have gotten for you. Speaking with a therapist and/or psychiatrist would certainly be best.
The one major rule is that if you do begin medication, DO NOT for any reason, try to take yourself off of them. This must be done under a doctor's guidance to wean you off when you are ready.
I do hope others have great advice to give.

Celeron:
Maybe only a doctor could tell for sure if you needed medication.
I know that during my worse years I took meds. and I feel that I really needed them and that they helped a lot.
I think that the meds would be preferable to your letting the anger spill over to your young children as you wrote about earlier. I'm not judging at all. I am in deepest sympathy with you. I understand how very difficult this is for you.
But if you took meds just until you got a good handle on the skills of the program , it might be very beneficial to you.
There are lots of kinds of meds. now. And they might find one that you could take without it backfiring on you.
It might be worth a try.
I took meds for years. There is nothing wrong with it. If you genuinely need it. And since your children are being affected by your anxiety, then it might be that you do genuinely need the meds.
But it is best to talk all this over with a doctor or a therapist.
I just wish the best for you.
And I certainly do understand.
May you be blessed with calmness and peace

hello dear!!
I hope you are feeling better!! Ok, here is the deal..I am pregnant with anxiety and taking medications...it has helped me soooo very much. I dont think there is anything wrong with medication. You have to do what you feel comfort with, from my experience, medications work different for everyone, and your doctor will know what to prescribe to you. Sometimes we hear stories and get terrified right?? But is not going to be your case. Think positive, you are just trying to help yourself! Talk to your doctor and he will absolutly know what to prescribe you. Be patient, the meds take a little while to work, and another advice...if you start your meds always talk to your doctor if you feel is not working for ya, dont go off without consulting him!
I am sure you will be fine!!!
Pm if you need support!!!

Hmmm I'm still not so sure. I might try the program again first and see where that gets me. To be honest I am scared $hitless of meds, its the horror stories you hear. I have the program and Lucindas books, From panic to power, I have Life without limits, and I have a great book called "Feel the fear and do it anyway" by Susan Jeffers. There is bound to be peace somewhere in all of that?
Whatever it is you need to take you absolutely need to stop taking this out on your children. Do whatever you have to do to stop this cycle- This is not your children's fault and they do not deserve to be kicked. Leave the house, run down the street, set up a punching bag in the garage, call a hotline to help calm down, - anything- but please don't stay there and take it out on your kids.
celeron,
I was just like you.... not wanting to take meds! My suggestion..... don't take them if you don't want to!
If you have helped yourself before without meds, I encourage you to hang on a bit longer.
This program is wonderful and has helped many. This program helped me recover WITHOUT meds!
It's been many, many years now and I consider myself fully recovered.
The program will tell you that if you are taking meds, a time will come when you have to face things without them!
I did it.... that means you can do it too!
