I need to get the h1n1 and I am so scared.I really don't understand why because I use to get shots and IV's all the time for asthma. And If I got that bad again i would want one right away. They did make my heart do flip flops and skip beats but if I need them I waoukd take then.I know the .H1N1 won't do that but I can't get it out of my head.Any suggestions PLEASE!!!!.
Thanks, Diane

Hi Diane-

I appreciate your dilemma. I decided to get the H1N1 shot about 2 weeks ago, along with my kids. I decided that I would look rationally at the odds in this decision. I found that I had heard zero news stories about people falling over ill/dead from the vaccine and I had heard quite a few news stories about people getting ill/dead from getting the actual sickness. And with the way our media is, I figured if anything bad was associated with the millions of doses of vaccine given out, we'd have heard about it. Plus, I took solace in the fact that the H1N1 vaccine was made in exactly the same way as the normal seasonal flu vaccine (in eggs) and that they ask you the same questions before they give it to you.

I had zero pain in the arm, zero symptoms, zero anything with my shot. I don't like to get shots because I usually worry about "what if I get sick, etc. and they can't remove any vaccine because they shot it into me, etc.", so I chose to go to my kids' pediatric clinic and have the shot there with them. That way I was in a health care setting and had care available should I need it, plus I had a nurse who is used to giving shots each day at her job so she was very experienced and very friendly and tender as she works with kids for her life. And I rewarded us all with ice cream after, which takes your mind off pretty much anything. Plus, I got the shot after I had done some hard exercise that morning, so I was tuckered out and really didn't care if she poked me or not. I had no trouble letting my arm just relax and hang.

It's been in there 2 weeks, like I said, and I hope that my antibodies are ready to go should they be called into service.

I hope somewhere in here you can find balm for your mind and you feel peace about your choice. I'll say a prayer for you about this.

Newrunner,
I agree with everything you wrote. I liked how you analyzed the risk vs benefits. You're right..if there were any problems with the vaccine, the news would have reported it. At first I wasn't going to get the H1N1 shot, and had some anxiety about it. But I did get it in November, and I didn't have any side effects or problems. Everyone I know who got the shot hasn't had any problems either. Great advice in having it given in a secure-feeling medical facility, where they've had a lot of experience with it. Finally, great idea in treating yourself to ice cream. How you handled this really exemplifies all the great concepts of the the program program! Great job! Best wishes Diane!
