Oral Surgery

After New Years Weekend, I decided to get my wisdom teeth pulled-out as well as a dead molar. I asked for a bridge for the molar that will be gone, but I'm very worried because of the pain that may come afterwords and getting my teeth pulled-out. I've never been through that before.

Hi MrCleveland--Getting your wisdom teeth won't hurt depending on if you are going under or general anesthetic. My youngest child just got his done, but the Dentist used a shot to dull the pain and was suppose to have given him some calming pills the day before so that he could have taken it 30mins before surgery.

The office people messed up and I was waiting for the Dentist to give him the relaxant via shot in the arm or something. When I asked about it, the Dr looked surprise and then quickly got the laughing gas prepared for him, which was out of Oxygen. So they had to get that set up.

A definite faux paux on the Dental office medical staff. But my son did fine, as he heard that the way he got his done cost less and recovered much quicker than he if went under with sodium pententhal (sp?) like I did and my other children.

But I like going under, and enjoyed recovery with codeine for pain. Then went to college out out of state still with chipmunk cheeks! :p That is all fun too!

Now my husband had a bridge, and it finally disintegrated, due to the sustaining teeth succumbed to crumbling roots and now he has no teeth there where the bridge was. Poor dental care and a bad teenager.

So take care of the teeth you have and keep your bones strong so that you will still have your teeth in your 50's.

You'll do fine, don't let my stories scare you. They make great pain killers these days and we have even better dental care than in the 60's in a small town. I grew up in a big city and my mother was an RN. So dental insurance wasn't a problem. And we rarely had sweets at our house, where DH had access to a family store.

My wisdom teeth were impacted when I had them removed. I had waay more pain BEFORE the surgery with the impaction. I went under and felt nothing but the pinch of the Novocaine under my tongue..that hurt! But everything else, Tylenol3 with Codeine was awesome LOL!! I had NO swelling the day after the surgery. No chipmunk cheeks. I think that depends on how your genetics are because my mother had NO chipmunk cheeks when she had her's removed either. Neither did my sister. Although some of my friends did.
I DID get a dry socket however, and let me tell you THAT HURTS! Do NOT smoke or drink through a straw! I didn't listen to the doctor and did those things anyway and got a dry socket. That was more painful than the impacted teeth! Most of my friends were fine though and I made it through them putting a pack in my dry socket. I made it through everything and all the pain didn't last long. Every thing passed. You should get through it just fine.

I didn't have pain after pulling impacted wisdom teeth. Or when they pulled 4 baby teeth for my braces when I was a kid. They can give you meds if you want some on hand afterwards. Just try ibuprofen that works with keeping your jaw muscle pain to a minimum. Tylenol doesn't work on jaw pain and I think a lot of pain comes from the jaws when teeth are extracted. Definitely ibuprofen works. use some ice packs for taking and keeping swelling down. Hang in there, and don't be afraid to call the dentist and keep getting help. I didn't have pain except with a root canal but again, take the meds. You'll be fine!!! think good thoughts, most people don't have any issues.

My son had a dry socket too! That was bad...nutty kid. He just wouldn't follow Dr's advice nor his mother's.

He would eat the wrong foods too soon. So I had to take him back in to the DR. He survived...he's young

But he had pain killers and of course they helped when he needed them.

I only had 3 of 5 teeth pulled-out.

Luckily, the ones I reserved for later removal are out all the way, grew straight, and didn't rot away.
