Have you done this? If so how? I have managed to kick alcohol and that in itself has made me feel totally different, but Nicoteine is a different story. I have tried before and got to day 3 and then started again, To be honest it wasn't that hard, there was no pain or anything but the reason I started again was because it triggered depression, I felt like crying for no reason at all, I've never experienced that before.

Things I have tried are self help hypnosis books, gum and little lozengers. In the UK we have tablets available called Zyban and Champix, the doctors here are very keen to get you on these but to be honest I am afraid of them, they have been linked to suicide, something I really don't want to be dealing with at the min.

So any advice much appreciated, I find it hard to actually get started now after that last failed attempt, I am $hit scared of the depression,

Congratulations on wanting to quit smoking. I will be a non-smoker for 8 years on 3/8/09. I was able to quit because I needed to have surgery on 3/9 and was in the hospital about 4 days and could not smoke. When I got out, I thought I wanted a cigarette, but it made me sick to my stomach and I never went back. My husband, on the other hand, decided to quit because I did. He used the nicotine patches (I don't know if you have those in the UK). He tried the Zyban and hated the way it made him feel. In addition to the patches, he drank a ton of water with fresh lemon squeezed into it. He said it felt that it was flushing the nicotine from his body. He will be a non-smoker in June 2009 for 8 years.

Good Luck to you in your endeavor to quit.

You can stop smoking if you really want to, I know you can do it. I was a 2 - 3 pack a day smoker & stopped cold turkey. The Governor of Iowa added a $1 tax on cigarettes so that made them around $4 to $4.50 per pack depending on the brand a person smoked. Anyway that was my incentive to stop smoking. I to drank tons of water & when I got the urge to smoke I would pop a peppermint lifesaver in my mouth. I tried Zyban but couldn’t see where it was helping me any. I also tried using the nicotine patches but they made me very nervous & made my heart palpitate. Nobody said it would be easy & it wasn’t easy at all. I had picked a date to stop smoking about 6 months before I quit. I picked my birthday as the stop smoking date, that way I could remember from year to year when I quit. It will be 2 years this March 28th that I quit smoking.
Good Luck, you can do it.

LOL I guess you’re right about $4.50 being a bargain. I think I would definitely quit at those prices. Think of the money you could spend on other things or save if you quit smoking. Of course you could be independently wealthy for all I know & could afford those high prices LOL. Is everything in the UK as high as the smokes are? Such as gas, gas here in Iowa is around $1.80 but was over $3.00 at one time.
I still catch myself reaching in to my pocket for a smoke now & then. I guess it was a habit for so many years that it’s just a reflex action. Do I miss smoking? You bet I do. I enjoyed smoking & I really didn’t want to quit but there were so many reason to quit. It cost to much, makes your breath smell bad, makes your clothes & everything else smell bad, could cause lung cancer & other diseases plus many other things. My breathing isn’t near as good as it used to be but guess what, I still miss smoking & probably always will. I also can say I’m glad I quit & hope I never ever start again. As far as quitting, it was very hard to do. I also went through the stage of “I can’t do this” & also went through the depression part. I just tried to keep busy & I had a ton of people tell me I can do it & they reminded me of the reasons not to smoke. I would mark each day on the calendar & before I knew it a month had gone by then another month & so on. The urge to smoke started to go away after about the second month.
Keep trying to quit & sooner or later you will finally stop smoking. Don’t ever give up, I know you can do it if you really want to.
Take Care,
Triple “L” (Larry)
