Greetings

Post by PatrickJ » Wed Feb 02, 2011 3:31 pm

My name is Patrick, I am a 20 year old from Ontario who experiences social anxiety and depression. I have been putting off getting help with this for 3 or 4 years, however, since telling my mom about my anxiety issues my Dad has steped in an ordered this program for me which I'm thankful and excited to begin.

The last few days I have been thinking deeply about my behavior throughout the years and it has come to my attention that the only person I've been making feel bad, or inadequate, or jealous, ect, ect.. is MYSELF! The only person that can get me out of this hole I created is MYSELF! So even though I am uncertain of how to get back on my feet this program seems like the best start for me.

Hello All.

Hey Patrick

Taking responsibility is the first step I believe for any kind of change to happen! By you accepting the fact that YOU are responsible for past events and YOU are responsible for changing your circumstances it is in fact the beginning of your change process for the good! You are very mature for a 20 year old! I know MANY people who cannot accept responsibility for anything! They blame others and never themselves! They are in denial and they will never experience any change in their circumstances! Just by the mere fact of accepting responsibility for yourself change is inevitable! Without acceptance change is merely impossible! Work diligently on the program and keep in communication with people on this board! They really have much experience in dealing with anxiety disorders! It has really helped me alot! Good luck!

Hi Patrick,

I can honestly say that you have taken an enormous step by realizing that you are the one responsible for you... good job! You will find that this program helps a lot. There are a couple of things I would say to you. Please do not rush the program. Take it at your own pace. If you need a couple of weeks on one lesson, take them. An extra couple of weeks won't hurt. Don't skip any lessons even if you think that they don't apply to you. One lesson builds on another and this is what makes the program so good. And finally please do the relaxation exercise each and every day. Do it twice if you have the time.

It's a great program. It works. They keys are time and patience. Oh, and when you come to Lesson 3, it is crucial. It is all about negative thinking and anxious thoughts. Please pay particular attention to that lesson and do the exercises for each lesson.

Welcome to the website and to the program. Ask as many questions as you need to! Have fun and good luck to you. :)

Welcome, Patrick. I echo what everyone posts and want to add the following:

1) How wonderful that you can talk about your issue with your parents. Very important, indeed.

2) It's great to assume responsibility but try not to be too hard on yourself. Biochemical changes sometimes do occur in young adults for no known reasons, necessarily. Attention is needed and that is what you as a family are doing. There is good support here. Best to you.
