Karma question

In the personal settings area of the profile page there is a place that has a karma summary for yourself. What exactly is this, what does it mean and do we use it for something? Thanks for any info guys!

I believe it had something to do with the ammount of postings or something. I am not 100% sure though. It is inactive right now and has been well since i've signed up.

Thanks NinjaFrodo. I thought that might be what it was, but wasn't sure. Makes sense though.
