Hello! I just found out yesterday from my doctor that I have an underactive thyroid. Started meds today. This is the lowest dose I am on and will increase gradually until it is working right. My question is....does anyone know the relationship between thyroid and anxiety/depression? I'm hungry for some answers on this, because it may explain alot of my body symtoms. Thanks for any info.

Thanks EMMAtophobia, I had written you a reply a few minutes ago and the deleted it my mistake. I was trying to delete a different one. Anyway! I appreciate your insight. I am hoping these thyroid meds help some of my symptoms. I do have generalized anxiety disorder but I pretty much do know where that stems from. Nice to chat with a fellow Canadian. I'm from Sasatchewan.

Hi there. I am Hypothyroid and having a Thyroid problem makes you 100% MORE sucseptible to anxiety/depression. I did alot of research and my doctor said it is true. After being on Synthroid I will tell ya, it make a world of difference!

I NEVER had these problems until my thyroid went bad! I developed hyperthyroidism/Graves disease and it was all down hill from there. Stress may have triggered the thyroid problem but the whole thyroid situation caused my anxiety/ocd/tmj.......So here I am trying to recover and not get back to where I used to be in life....BUT even BETTER!
God Bless

(My Graves is in remission and I'm now hypo)

I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, an auto immune disease where the thyroid can be either hyper or hypo. When I was diagnosed, I was hypo and was on 90 mg/day of Armour Thyroid. I am now taking 60 mg/day. There are times when I feel anxious and need to adjust the dose. But I have read books and various websites that having a thyroid issue can cause anxiousness and depression. Heck when I have too much thyroid I am spazzy and feel so hyperactive and when I do not have enough I can feel tired, sluggish and just so down. These are hormones here, so when they get out of whack it can cause all sorts of things like glucose, cholesterol, weight and mood to be off. Thyroid meds at the correct dose work wonders!
